  • The gases arent traveling around a bend in those pics, they are being forced out of the rear silencer in a straight line right out through the straight tail pipe. Gases are still a fluid and fluids w

Big bore is more important than length when it comes to generating enough power to put a smile on the wife's face lol

Lol!

Is it me or have milltek balls'd up with the exhaust tip assembly, as only one output tip gets dirty thru exhaust gasses while the other stays sparkling clean with it being a branch off to make it look good :|

Too right mate mine is exactly the same! The left-hand/straight-through tip gets much more dirty on mine. I'm on my second tip-assembly too.The first one gave absolutely no flow down the 'branch-off' tip at all - the gas flow down the other gave a pan-pipe effect of a high-pitched whistle when booting it as a result. Fair-play to Milltek tho -they sent out another set which looked identical but doesn't have the same issue. :wonder:

How the engineers thought that the gas coming out the backbox would do a 90-degree turn halfway out the tip assembly is anyones guess. I'm no expert but even I realise that gases will flow down the 'path of least resistance' so its no surprise only one tip gets most of the dirt!

Just looks as if you've got some knock off exhaust system that I usually laugh at when I see twin tips with one dirty and the other one completely spotless.

I was told by some bloke whos had milltek systems 'all his life' that the right tip only comes into use when thrashing the car to allow gasses to flow between the two..which to me sounds like he's talking biscuits because like you said "even I realise that gases will flow down the 'path of least resistance' so its no surprise only one tip gets most of the dirt!" Bad design fault all round with the tip assembly!

I personally think miltek are overpriced and lets be honest, they aren't known for their build quality. (Bear in mind i have a miltek). Their only saving grace is having excellent aftersales support.

By you saying aftersales support do you mean warranty?

Yes mate. I know of loads of guys who have had cracked flanges, worn tail pipes etc on their Milteks, but as soon as they have highlighted it to Miltek HQ, they have replaced the faulty parts straightaway.

If only other companies were so 'pro-aftersales'

Ahhh right, I'll bare that in mind :)

yup same as mine , my car sounds like peter pan on crack when going mad with the padal, pretty anoying sometimes.

was talking about that with my exhaust guy and he might develop something new for the fabia

he said Y-style single sided, where each exhaust tip got its own silencer.

There was no way I could live with the whistling on mine - sounded like the ref was blowing for half-time in a football match every time I got above 3500rpm!

Milltek dealer recorded some video footage of it which he sent to Milltek HQ. They agreed it wasn't right and sent out another tailpipe unit plus arranged a courier to collect the old one at my convenience. They threw in a goodwill gesture too so can't complain about the aftersales backup at all!

A single exit Y-shaped tailpipe unit would've made most sense to me - then you would get 50-50 gas flow distribution.

Mate try taking off the tailpipe assembly then driving around - sounds like an absolute animal!

I thought that the tailpipes were mainly cosmetic but they do actually dampen the noise a fair bit.

It looks like the polo GTI and the Audi A1 also have the similar straight section with a connection coming off it. I wouldn't suggest though that they dont know what they are doing, end of the day these guys are experts in that field. How do we know that the gas doesn't find its way through that bend due to pressures? I don't know just speculating, as I don't perticularly know the flow characteristics of exhaust gas so I can't comment. I'm going to email milltek to today just asking them the question.

A little gas comes through but not much. You can tell because firstly the straight pipe gets way more sooty and also when you put your hand up to the exhaust you can feel loads of flow from the straight pipe and hardly any from the 90deg bendy one.

Strange, never had any off these problems ;). How does your endpipe look like?

Mines got a Gold Touch. The left pipe is more Black then the Other.

I'm curious, I'm emailing then right now about this.

Let us know what they say!

Here is a pic of the tailpipe unit - you can see the acute angle at which the second pipe branches off.....

Pretty daft if you ask me :)

:o ... Omg... Our fluid mechanics professor would easily fail me immediately if I showed him such a design (back in the years of university)

Hi and good morning

I am looking to choose a new exhaust for my fabia vrs 1.4tsi.

There has been some heated discussions on the forums regarding your exhaust with the tail pipe depicted below. People are experiencing a whistling noise and low flows on the side with the 90'bend. A diagram below explains what they are saying, green shows the favoured flow and the red shows the side they are experiencing; no or little flow, whistling effect under load and a cleaner tip (indicating its not in use).

Now obviously we are no experts in gas flows where as you guys are, I just would like clarification if this is an actual issue with any twin exhaust tip where a 90'bend comes off the straight.

If you can explain to me how this should work,I'd be happy to clear up people's concerns on the forums about this using your explanation. As I also mentioned I'm a potential customer looking to buy your full system product, I wondered if there was a specific reason how come an "Y" connection wasn't used to even flow or if it doesn't work like that.

I look forward to your reply

Regards

Mike Wilkinson

Sounds good :) wait to hear their verdict on the matter.

Good email. When the Milltek dealer that fitted mine reported the 'whistle' he was told that a special "diverter valve" was meant to be fitted between the two pipes to get equal flow and it was missing from mine. The second set I had looked identical tho and I couldn't see any valve in place! Whistle disappeared tho so not too bothered :-)

I have done hydraulics as well and this goes against that, but I know nothing about the characteristics of exhaust gas flow. Who's to say it doesn't like to find even flow through different pressures?? Just a stab in the dark, but as I said in my email it needs clearing up.
