Auto Headlights always on

Featured Replies

Anyone else had this problem ?? The Auto lights on system think my lights need to be on all the time. Tried reseting the MFD and turning them off manually (which works) but as soon as I go back to auto - Bing - on they come.

Any suggestions before I go annoy the dealership ?

Cheers Dave

I'd like to reproduce this! In winter, we need the headlights always on (drl isn't good enough) - and I'd like to keep the auto functions....

happened to me as well when I had wipers switch NOT in off possition

Any suggestions before I go annoy the dealership ?

Cheers Dave

Go and ask your dealer...I had the same problem in a new Vectra a few years ago. They needed to replace one of the controller modules so it may be something similar.

Funny, I was just coming on here to start pretty much the same thing! I'd say mine works properly about less than 20% of the time. The Rest of the time I have to manually turn them off.

Is there anyway to change the sensitivity on them? on my previous cars with auto lights there was a setting for the sensitivity that you could adjust.

Chris

Yes you can change the sensitivity..... but only with VCDS.

Over an indicated 90 and mine come on and stay on for 4/5 mins. More than 10 consecutive wipes of the screen and the same. Masked from that they're pretty good in their auto setting

I get the same with the 90 mph thing - not sure on the wipers but probably the same!

Not that I've ever done 90 on a uk public road.

They're meant to do that - it's in the manual.

Of course you haven't...neither have I!

See the Nov11 owners manual...page 55

Motorway lights

If the automatic light control has been switched on and the vehicle speed is over

140 km/h for at least 10 seconds, the side lights and low beam are switched on

automatically.

If the vehicle speed is below 65 km/h for at least 2 minutes, the lights are switched

off.

Rain lights

If you move the windshield wiper lever in the position slow wipe for more than 5

seconds, the side lights and low beam are automatically switched on. The light is

switched off when the windshield wiper lever is no longer than 4 minutes in the

position for slow or intermittent wipe.

If you switch on the windscreen wipe in the operation rain sensor for longer than

10 seconds or in the operation permanent wipe (position 2 or 3) ? page 66

switching on for longer than 15 seconds, the side lights and low beam are switched

on automatically. The light switches off if the windscreen wipe is in operation

rain sensor for more than around 4 minutes or is not switched on in the operation

permanent wipe.

My lights always come on when I start the car in my garage but sometimes the lights will not go off , sometimes they go off after 5 minutes and sometimes they go off immediately after I exit the garage. It is annoying but I have been at a loss as to what to do about it. There is no real logic unless they are set to come on (and stay on) at any light level less than blinding sunlight..

Make sure there is no dirt or damage in front of the light sensor, which is on top of the screen behind the rear view mirror. Try turning the wipers to off as well, to see if that clears the lights.

its also good to remember that they will come on in daylight under certain circumstances and stay on for a set period. One has already been mentioned and thats going above 82mph, another is when the car thinks its raining.

if all looks ok, it could be a duff sensor behind the mirror.

Tried most things I could think of, hoever I haven't yet removed the air freshener from the rear view mirror, which I'll do today.

Called the dealer and arranged a warranty visit - There reaction was "oh .... right" suggesting that they may have seen this before.

I'll let you know what happens after Wednesday's visit

(My choice for Wednesday BTW - the dealer was ready to see me this afternoon!)

I thought that early Superb's that don't have the integrated DRL's next to the front fogs utilise dipped headlights (at a reduced brightness, similar to dim/dip) to perform the role of DRL's?

A little late in replying – I’m still recovering from the £65+vat bill.

It seems that the lighting controls share a fuse with the diagnostic port. If this fuse blows then the lights default to on, hence the switch doing nothing.

It makes sense when I think about and with 20/20 hindsight I should have checked the fuses. The bit that hurts the most though is that the dealer followed standard diagnostic process and went for plugging in the box of electronics to be told what was wrong. As the fuse is shared with the diagnostic port, this didn’t work and so they spent 20 minutes working out why. Having done that they then spent 40 minutes working out that they had fixed the fault.

Bottom line – if your headlights are on and the switch doesn’t work – check the fuses.

Elegance estate? Can't be older than 2010 then? Still under warranty, surely?

I doubt a blown fuse will be covered by warranty. Thanks Mannyo, I turned the windscreen wipers off auto and now the lights work as they should.

As Albervin says "tyres, bulbs, wiper blades and fuses" are general wear and tear items and not covered.

A little miffed that no one at the dealer thought to say "check the fuses" I'm sure Skoda would know this is what happens ... then again that is why we have Briskoda !

Trying to think logically, when a fuse blows its to protect the circuit, so what has caused the fuse to blow? Call me naive (people probably will  ) . Shouldn't the dealer try to diagnose WHY the fuse has blown? On the other hand, it's probably another silly question from me. :sun:

Looks like I've just saved myself £65 + vat thanks to picturesports, I have the same issue and will be checking fuses this weekend

Did the checking the fuses solve the problem ?

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have this problem so will be checking my fuses shortly.

I'll post back my findings...

I thought that early Superb's that don't have the integrated DRL's next to the front fogs utilise dipped headlights (at a reduced brightness, similar to dim/dip) to perform the role of DRL's?

That's my understanding also.

  • 4 years later...

I don't like repeated threads so I have deliberately re animated this...

Can I lower the speed at which the lights turn on via vcds?

I feel that motorway s[speeds should always be accompanied by headlights or is my reasoning unsound?

Off the top of my head, I remember the VCDS having the option to change (in percentage) the amount of light from the xenons for the DRL (default: 92)... but regarding your issue, I think it is too specific (regarding it being an actual planned feature) to even be changed with ODIS (of course, it could somehow be reprogrammed, but probably on the EEPROM level) ... of course, I may be wrong ... :)
