1.8 TSI - 3 months in

Featured Replies

A few observations just over 3 months after buying a 2010 1.8 TSI Elegance (manual) with about 15k on the clock.

  1. Great engine.....but sometimes feels a bit hesitant, especially when trying to get off the mark quickly at roundabouts. Feel like it may stall then kind of jerks its way off. May be me but I am a pretty competent driver and still can't quite get it right. Sometimes feel it is not running 100% smooth in terms of power delivery but can't quite put my finger on why and when. May be that previous petrol car was mk 6 Gti with DSG and I am comparing it to that?
  2. Using a fair bit of oil, more than I have noticed in any other car. Gone from max to min in 6 weeks with not a lot more than daily 8 mile commute and a bit of fairly local pottering around. I do drive it quite hard and suspect it was driven sedately by previous owners as far as I can tell. Was serviced at 13.5k and now done 17.5k. Will keep an eye on it but slightly concerns me.
  3. Dashboard rattle - drives me insane......keep thinking I have fixed it and back it comes. Never had a rattle that annoys me so much and believe it is a very common issue. Not good enough for a car that otherwise delivers so much.
  4. Seats - bloody awful and cheap feeling foamy structure although actually not wholly uncomfortable. Lumber support completely innefective or perhaps broken. As above - not good enough for an Elegance spec.
  5. Sports suspension that it is specced with is great, not for everyone but I like a firm set-up.
  6. No ESP as standard in elegance spec. My 2006 Mazda 6 came with it as standard.

So, those are my gripes but overall I love the car and am very pleased with my purchase. Hopefully a trip to the dealer will sort a couple of this issues under warranty but interested in views as to my thoughts.

The little judder is common to the tsi... mine does it sometimes , a remap cures it.

no ESP means no teves ABS problems

Great car

As long as you have 1500 rpm or above it should pull away smoothly. Less than that and it can stutter a bit as there is very little torque at very low revs.

I do about 5k - 6k miles a year (bought new in May 2008 and on just under 23k miles). I have had 2 variable services and had to top up just over half a litre of oil in this time. I have driven mine reasonably hard since new and had a remap after 2 years.

Had mine from new Nov. 2008. Hardly any oil use , I also only do about 7000 miles per year. The pull away seems more to do with balancing the clutch with the revs at moving off. The clutch does not allow any leeway in speed of release!!

Regarding the rattle, I thought I had the same but it turned out to be the tube to the mirror buzzing (from the windscreen sensor).

So far I've had nothing even minor go wrong with it (tempting fate).

Mine's not used much oil from new either, but it does feel like it'll stall occasionally when i'm pulling away. My clutch control probably as much as anything.

I needed the best part of 3 litres of oil before the first service, since then it has settled down and had at most half a litre in the 8000 miles since.

Ref the dashboard rattle - if it's a squeak from the left side of the dash, every 6 months or so I have to pop the little trim piece off at the left end of the dash and tighten all the screws underneath, and those you can access through the glovebox. This usually cures it for a few months until the rubbish road surfaces round here shake it all loose again.

I've been using a TSI manual for 3years now it s a gem of an engine ...

As you said there is a little hesitance in first when looking for a quick getaway ... feels like forever before the turbo spools up ...

For this, I would suggest you to hold the revs a tiny bit higher (not a lot as we dont want to wear the clutch out) and also switching off the ASR helps it considerably.

Also many people have the habit of trying to pick the car up in second gear at slower speeds .. but the 6 speed is geared in such a way that shifting to 1st is the better option ..... Avoid letting the revs drop below 1k rpm in gear.

I dont know if it's a placebo or something, but I more often than not switch the ASR off... The engine feels a bit more free.

Please explain switching off ASR. Is it done from a dashboard button?

It's okay - I've found it. Will leave it off for next dry day and see if engine response is any different
