I've done Manchester to Oxford and back, and averaged 42 MPG for the whole trip. I think the 50 MPH limits help.

Since when has more plastic equalled more style? And isn't the boy racer image of the vRS all about trying (but not succeeding) to express virility through car ownership? Drag inducing spoilers - see first comment. :p

um well Denis i think you will find my car has less plastic than the std vRS.... as for the wing i removed the ineffectual styling option and replaced it with something that actually worked.. hence the dramatic improvement in high speed stability...

as for looking good well black wheels is where its at:D

As opposed to the 4x4 ownership experience? The last alternative to bus travel... :D

now now... unlike Denis im not going to attack the opposition merely remind them that its horses for courses... on is designed to go fast one is designed to go slower in comfort with more assorted stuff in the boot..

Christ I hope some of the result is DUE to the remap, I managed 35 once, normally its about 29, theragain the scoob was sub 20 average, is it something I am doing wrong or am I just having toooooooo much fun !!!!!!!!!

Definitely having too much fun Stuart. Any of the 1.8s should be capable of 40 although more than that is exceptional. As Rob said, the 10 mph between 75 and 85 makes a big difference as does the next 10 mph below that. Steady speed is the key, after which it's only hills that hit your mpg. And headwind.... which I think must be the reason for my different consumption figures to work (heading East) and home (heading West).

I find driving with the instant mileage display on the computer is a great teacher. You really can see the results of even a tiny movement of the right toe.... :D

cruise helps.. stops you hunting between speeds when you dont realise it...

Ian

Oh - you kept it below 3000rpm - that's a tad under 65mph for the 4x4.

I thought I was sad / boring enough keeping it under 75 sometimes ! ;) I can't think of a more economical petrol 4x4 with decent performance to be honest.

Don't get me talking about my TDi Quattros though -they were surprising fun to track day for the same reason that Paul/FFelan is enjoying the shock and awe factor at the moment in the Skud.

I get 25p per Km (Dutch Company) & do around 50,000 Km per year.

I pay for car & Upkeep (as it is my car!!)

Keeps me in Tyres & Stella !!

Graham

My company pays 40p mile , which I dont think is to bad. They used to pay 44p but due to tax changes they reduced it otherwise I would be taxed on the 4p.

I pay for my own petrol. Am I the odd one out here? :(

You are not alone.

I had a car / fuel allowance with my last job, so that's how I could afford to do 25,000m in 8 months in a modified Impreza Turbo ! I would have stayed with diesel otherwise.

I get 39p a mile - 49p if I had a 2litre engine :D

Haven't paid a fuel bill for years now.

That is, not directly out of my pocket. I do of course get 25% of the new consumer price of the car added to my gross income every year. Still much better than having to pay for the road tax, insurance, maintenance and depreciation yourself, though.

Read this thread with interest, about your tax breaks and mpg figures. I had a little cruise by the coast today for about 2 hours since I had little to do and ended up doing a round circle of about 60 miles. A mixture of single carrageway fast, bendy country roads, town and slow A-roads as well as motorways I wasn't expecting such a good figure as 66.9 mpg! Evidence is below although it was too dark to take a good picture of and my camera is rather old so only has 1.3 mega pixels. It was 67 but as I reversed into the driveway it clicked down one! Diesel, ahh it's a pleasure to own! On the tax breaks and mileage rates sadly my employer doesn't give me money for my car, it prefers it's own trucks and vans. However I do get the sum on
