winter tyres

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

looking to be a bit ahead of the game this year and have winter tyres for when cold/snow forecast. Current tyres are standard 225/50 r17 94w Dunlop SP1. Given budget constraints and reading some views on site looking to get 16" winter tyres and steels. mytyres.ie currently has bit of a promo on on maybe chance to get at reasonable price.

Q is can someone more learned in these matters guide me to exactly what tyre/combo I can get that will fit my 2010 Yeti , RHD 2.0 CR-TDI, diesel 81 kW (110 PS). Is 205/55 R16 91H suitable say Dunlop sp sport 4d or 3d or Goodyear Ultragrip 8?

what about if get wheel and tyre set would 205/55 R16 91T Goodyear Ultra Grip 8 M+S marking BSW be suitable? as per mytryes.ie website? does it matter much if 91T etc etc apart from speed rating?

Cheers

  • The answer to that is not as simple as it might seem. Insurers can't just impose whatever conditions they want; they must comply with law when they write their contracts. Unfortunately the principal

  • That was true a very long time ago when wheels were located by their nuts or bolts. But all modern wheels are hubcentric: the weight is carried by a flange on the hub that fits closely into the hole a

The mytyres supplied steel rims are OK but the original VAG ones are better and probably worth paying that bit extra for.

Unless you intend to fit chains, I would recommend running the 215/60 size tyre on 16" rims; run both 205/55 and 215/60 in a winter pattern on the Yeti and in my view the 215/60 is a little more stable in bends when it gets that bit warmer.

Currently have Hankook W310 winters and if your looking to save a bit on tyre cost they make a good choice for all cold rubbish weather conditions.

Three months before I got my car, I got a very good set of Audi alloys for £60 on ebay, they were collect only which puts people off buying. The car arrived too late for last winter so they have yet to be used.

The size of tyre will also afffect your speedo accuracy, the Yeti speedo is slightly optimistic with its reading but if it were spot on, compared to an indicated 70mph with your current tyre size you would be doing 67.42 mph on 205/55/16 and 70.85 with 215/60/16. I phoned my local tyre dealer yesterday regarding winter tyres, he said he makes so little profit selling tyres I would be better off buying online and paying him £10 per corner to fit them (ALS tyres Warfield)

so I have 4 x 215/60/16 99H Michelin on the way from Oponeo. If you are going to fit a T rated tyre Camskill have got some 215/60/1 99T Michelin Alpin for £97.60 each.

Last year Rainworth did a package of wheels and tyres for £599

I have recently purchased hankook W310's for £72 each fitted, but they took about 8 weeks from order to delivery

Almost any winter tyre will be better than a summer tyre in cold weather.......

PS. I run Continental WinterContact tyres.

thanks for replies guys.

- i would not be intending to put chains on

- here is link to website http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl for tyre only and http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/skw.pl for tyre and steels. I had always thought hankook were not too good for wear - is this true as daily commute is quite alot or is this less of a concern as in snow/ice ?

being in ireland unfortunetly cant avail of some of the offers i see in UK

For my part I cant answer, I don't actually have a car yet to hang them on :@ . TP meanwhile has been using some for a while.

The Hankook winters I have, do not appear to be wearing any more quickly than the Bridgestone Blizzak or Nokian WR G2 I've also used, if anything they are preforming better than the Blizzak in all respects and on par with the Nokian.

What type hankook tyres - Icebear W310 i*cept Evo?

What type hankook tyres - Icebear W310 i*cept Evo?

yes that's the one I'm running;

Prices appear to have gone up across the board over the last year; from memory mine cost £67 a corner delivered 13 months ago but still a lot cheaper than the premium brands.

I got these last October and although not a lot of snow they are excellent. Got me up to beyond Dungeon Gill in the langdales when most cars were stuck in heavy 6/8 inch snow and ice then we would have been stuck in cottage for extra day if we had been in Fabia.

My Yeti was delivered Dec 23 '12. The Dealer agreed to put my 205/55RF16 91H RFT TL Vredstein Wintrac Exrememe tyres (I PM'd many members for advice before I made my decision to buy them) onto Skoda OESteel wheels and put the Summer alloys in the boot.

FYI, we live in Cumbria.

Within a couple of days there was about 4" of snow on a place called Hardknott Pass in the Western part of the Lake District (a short drive from us) - for the uniniated this can be a 'white knuckle ride' experience  in the best of conditions! A quarter of the way up in snow untouched by other vehicles (cos they were more sensible and had parked at the bottom!) I stalled the new car near the Roman Fort  Previously, (and the reason I got rid of my Citroen) I did something similar during Spring, and when I tried to start off again in the wet (not rainy) conditions the wheels spun and would not grip - I had to reverse down to a flatter part and get a run up.

Back to the Yeti: I started the car up on the snowy hill and continued the ascent without a drama. Now I'm not saying it's the greatest hill ascent vehicle in the world and it does have its limitations but in that circumstance with the Vreds on and 4WD the ascent appeared to be effortless. The descent in snow (which I never look forward to) was made with the 'hill descend' functilon activated (which worked perfectly) but my foot and hand were never far away from the brakes/gear lever as I have an unexplicable confidence issue any electronically controlled 'hill descend' function.

I got the Yeti to get me around the Lake District in WInter which in my mind is the most beautiful time of year for walking the 'hills.' I look forward to the next lot of snow with confidence, but not over confidence! ;):smirk:

My Yeti was delivered Dec 23 '12. [snip]

...and it does something very special when it reaches 88mph

- after much deliberation eventually went with 205/55 R16 91T Goodyear UltraGrip 8 winter tyres (well reviewed) and steels. This to allow for purchase of suitable trims or may try paint? Hopefully a worthwhile investment. 215/60 was extra 50 a corner and with tyre rack and trims budget was not really there. Hopefully will be fine as note quite a few have gone with the 215/60 profile and wont notice the lower sidewall etc much - at least the conservative speedo will keep me in check - not a bad thing ;)

I see UK VAG origianl skoda wheel trims approx £31 ea +del but UK. ebay does not seem to have much in the way of 16" trims and suggestions.

I recently bought 4 steel wheels plus Rif trims from Rainworth Skoda for £206, add 4 Nokian 215/60 R16's from Oponeo at £352 and I have winter confidence plus acceptable appearance. Rainworth did say that Rif trims were in very short supply from Skoda.

I was considering some cheap 'Skoda' ones from ebay.

The ones I have are genuine Skoda parts - http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/Yeti/Wheels-Suspension/ They are certainly more expensive (mine cost £46), I guess you pays your money and makes your choice. I much preferred the appearance of the genuine Skoda Rif covers as they seemed to properly "fit" the construction of the Skoda steel wheels - spokes lining up with holes in wheels etc.

Do a Johann, and spray the wheels silver!!

Do a Johann, and spray the wheels silver!!

Which, in my opinion, is the worst possible choice! I think silver sprayed steel wheels look just horrible. But everyone to their own!

But then I think plastic wheel trims look terrible!

But then I think plastic wheel trims look terrible!

Which is why I bought a second set of alloys. I'm not to worried about kerbing them, in more Than 40 years of driving I have only hit the kerb once in icy conditions.

I'll take the risk, rather than have steels for the winter...

Having bent 2 steel wheels due to debris on the M25, I'm glad I don't have alloys, they would have been written off!!!

That's cheap. I was quoted over £100 for 4.

I'll probably end up going for the Caddy hub caps as they are cheap, about £7-8 each I think and stay with the black wheels
