Turbo on VRS - what does it do when it lets go?

Featured Replies

Was out today and I think mine has... (turbo is under warranty so should be OK)

Normaly alot of white smoke and lots of oil out the back!

Joe - heard what could be described as a comical sound: small pop of air pressure, then metal/mechanical spring letting go sort of sound. Then ~75% power loss, and lots of smoke smelling of oil, especially when putting foot on gas after an over-run down hill

Black or white smoke?

I had a turbo pipe blow off after a cam belt change several weeks back. There was alot of smoke then. The smoke was very black, thinish, consistent and sooty. Power dropped to almost nothing. This time is different. Intermittent chugs of lighter colured engine oil smelling clouds. I wouldn't have said completely white, but much 'whiter' than the black soot.

Does sound turbo related :( hopefully its not the actual turbo itself. Any oil out of the exhaust?

Out of exhaust? The oil slick clouds are out of there :) Cars behind were stopping to get air :bandit:

Is there any actual oil dripping from the exhaust or spats of it on your boot. It could still be the turbo with out this but if there is then it is most likley the turbo im affraid.

Exactly what happened to me yesterday morning I'm affraid! I've just a beer in my hand, as I was told earlier that another turbo and fitting will exceed £1K  We're currently saving for a house, so I'm well chuffed offf!!

What turbo would be recommended?

No sign of oil at all. Just very sooty

That's a ****er, I'm sorry. Fortunately I have a warranty, which I have checked and says it does cover the turbo, oil seals, etc

Hopefully it a bad boost leak or a overlooked pipe come off somewhere and not the turbo. Best to get it looked at as its the only way of realy telling.

This is when mine let go, no smoke, oil or any signs of failure. Just went 'pop' and that was that!

^ bit far from home there too

When mine went I was skint! Got a decent used turbo on here and got Unit 18 to fit it, managed to get it back on the road for less than £300.

That's reassuring, thanks

OK I'm not very bright, but could someone point me to a link which explains exactly what happens and why there is a lot of white smoke?

Thanks

You don't really need to spend ££££'s on a new turbo, find decent 2nd hand unit or a recon turbo and save some cash. But I admit a new turbo would give better piece of mind if you can afford to stretch that far.

Well report it to whoever you have the warranty with and let them sort it out.

the white smoke is normaly caused from the oil coming through the seals etc and burning in the hot exhaust pipe.

Many thanks. I've always associated oil with blue smoke, but of course that is oil which has been through the combustion process so would be different..

Yer like injector seals gone or similar give a blueish smoke but oil straight on to a hot exhaust just chucks it out. Mine did for about a minutue after i switched it off as there was so much oil and the exhaust was still pretty hot :(

Mine fills the road with smoke. No-one tailgates, that's for sure

Big pop noise (like a boost pipe has come off completely), lots of smoke, and engine speed increasing dramatically until you can shut off engine or stall it (if you have no ASV). Luckily as I have no ASV, I managed to stall it in a car park which had a steep incline, off the main road.

Mine went last night, (I think) wa giving it a hard time, approaching a roundabout gave it a blip and felt something pop, didn't accelerate just let the momentum take me to a pull in, the car makes a grinding sound on start up, when revved slightly and when turned off, is this my turbo gone? There is no smoke or oil, but i think because I haven't accelerated in it either the oil hasn't gone into the exhaust or in not sure after that :/ any help?
