Hey all

Made the wheel arch intercooler vent this afternoon, only took an hour - heres how...

Jack up and take off the wheel, the wheel arch is formable plastic so draw a box and measure equal spaces, I used 6" square and then use a stanley knife to cut out 3 vents in this space. The trick is to heat up the plastic and bend it to create flaps which keep out the water from the tyre, when it cools its stays in the shape you create as you can see in the pic

Just ensure the flaps dont stick out too much as it rubs on full lock, I bent them back in slightly from this photo and it was fine.

Doesn't look quite as neat as having the Audi TT vent in its place, but then you've saved yourself some money, created the same overall effect, and hell, who can actually SEE the work done when the wheels are fitted?

Ummm wont all the dirt/grip/mud/dust from the tyres go straight onto the back of your intercooler in effect blocking it and actually increasing the heat :confused:

When I did mine I spent a lot of time following the guides, and got the proper Audi TT Arch Liner, atleast I know the intercooler will be clean and it'll dissapate the air properly.

That shot is a very "upward facing" shot, so from the level, or above, the slats are facing the right way to block all the crap getting in, as the wheel comes down and around from the top. Does that make sense? The only way mega amounts of crap will get through those slats is he does 30mph in reverse around a muddy field.

I agree though that IF stuff were to get through, more would manage to in the above example, rather than the "narrower, but more of them, slats" on the TT vent.

I checked my I/C yesterday since installing the Arch Liner and guess what! not a spot of muck

Cool the intercooler down, the Fabia vRS has a SMIC not a FMIC, Audi's, Seat's, even VW's (the tourag's one is vast!) have them fitted as standard onto the arch liner but since the Fabia is the cheap VAG brand it misses a few tweaky bits, hence the need to retro fit it. Unfortunately an arch liner from another car doesnt bolt straight on (or we havent found one which does), which means you have to get an Audi TT arch liner for example (the S3 has a very large one I hear, ahum...no pun intended ) and cut the vent out, and fettle with your own arch liner until it's a perfect fit ( well if your a perfectionist like me that is ).

Mine's had a piece of B&Q alloy speaker grille in it since October and the back of the intercooler is spotless.

This pic was taken while in progress just to show how the holes look and from a low angle, the flaps are more closed now and should keep out any excess dirt, any water or muck will hit the top of them and roll off.

I would imagine they are pricey though due to lower numbers of manufacture compared to Audi TTs.

The vent, any vent, has got to be the cheapest mod for anybody's money, and you can't argue with the physics. My old Octy went around with a very fine mesh grille in the wheel arch for over 2 years, and the intercooler never looked dirty, neither did the feeble ally mesh take any dents or knocks from stones etc.

Must get around to doing the new one some day. One thing at a time ....
