Real world fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Hi, just wondered what sort of real world fuel consumption everyone is getting? I purchased a Hyundai i10 1.2 in January and I'm a bit disappointed with its 52mpg ( listed as 61mpg combined) now I know the listed figures are nowhere near reality but just wondered how close the city go figures are. I am interested in a 5 door se greentech.

Honest john section for real world mpg for most makes and models you can add yours to the list

The more people that add the truer the readings

You are doing well @ 52mpg, I used to get about 50 when driving 30 miles each way on my commute, which was mostly on unpopulated roads.

Around town I get mid forties.

If you go on the Hyundai forum you will see many people complaining there about MPG figures.

We are switching to a 60 Elegance Greentech, because the stop start technology should help in cross town traffic. Also we aim to keep this car for about 7-10 years and I don't think the i10 has the build quality to do that.

When we went for our Citigo test drive the difference between the 2 cars was instantly noticeable.

Yes, there are plenty on the Hyundai forums complaining....me included. Just filled the i10 Automatic again.....33.4mpg.

50 mpg is a figure I only fantasize about.

I get more than that from my petrol 1.2 DSG Yeti.

Most marques give inflated non real world lab tests, however some of the marques are quoting real figures and with new regulations soon arriving it will have to be authenticated on real roads and not rolling roads with no friction ( well less than Tarmac roads)

That's great wish I got that from my twinair!

problem is the rolling road is flat, no wind resistance so not a guide to real world expected economy

but it should give you guide / comparison between makes

problem is how do you make every manufacturer drive on the same bit of road in the same weather conditions to produce reproducable results

Hi

I've got a 75 Greentech elegance,

I easily get 55mpg, the highest I have had was 70mpg, how real they are I don't know, plus I haven't yet run it in

We regularly see low 60's on the PiD display but brim to brim calculations give an average figure of 56.9

So at a guess, the PiD is about 10 to 15% optomistic ?

Years ago you could always get the Urban figure, but not these days. All the car forums moan about this.

Smart advertise the Diesel as giving 85 MPG as the Urban figure. We are all saying we infact get 60 MPG in town, which is still good for an automatic, but nothing like the advertised figure.

I have got 80 MPG on a longer motorway run driving at a steady 55 MPH. Some say do not use air con or the radio.Never open a window, never go over 50 MPH. All this to save 50p a month!! I would sooner use air con etc and enjoy my car. Failing that you might as well walk lol.

here mine from my fab GL2

4 columns are trip cptr mpg, real mpg, trip computer accuracy (%), average mpg last 5 fill ups

53.8 ....... 54.49 ........-1.28

61.9 .......62.57 ........ -1.08

59.1 ....... 58.66 ......... 0.75

62.8 ....... 62.51 ......... 0.47

61.6 ....... 61.37 ......... 0.38 59.92

60.5 ....... 60.92 ......... -0.69 61.21

60.7 ....... 60.54 ......... 0.26 60.80

59.8 ....... 59.86 ......... -0.10 61.04

67.3 ....... 65.81 ......... 2.22 61.70

65.3 ....... 64.87 .......... 0.66 62.40

My son gets around 65mpg on his PID pootling around Lincolnshire.

That's a 60 bhp greentech.

Thanks everyone!

Always get an indicated 60 - 65 mph, have got a 75 mpg once on a long A-road run

My problem is my work is 3 miles (as crow flies) but 4.5 miles when driving, and is on a bus route, passed two schools, n up a steep bleeding hill, because of that i often have only about 50 mpg(1) going to work (around 7:30am), coming home tho i always get around 60mpg(1), however on the "real time" it is always in the high 60's so i know that the average is just due to being held up by other road users, but that is a different cup of tea :D

Showing 75 mpg for a mile or 2 or even 10 miles is not the same as driving 75 miles and only using 4.546 litres of petrol.

Its easy to go steady in cars and get 50-60 mpg maybe 70 mpg plus,

what really matters i believe is how many gallons (or litres) go in the tank & how many have been used by the end of a journey.

A proper Average, car starting and warming up and then doing the miles in a real situation.

On my last tank I got a range of 380 miles, that was with some minor energetic driving, would you say that is low? Its great compared to my 2001 1.4 8V MPI fabia where i was lucky to get 280 miles to a tank its amazing, but im not sure if its my driving style or what? By a tank i mean brim to brim

How many litres was that actually?

saying a tank does not mean much unless brimming doing 380 miles and brimming again & saying how many litres.

35 litres = 7.7 gallons nearly.

380 divided by 7.5 = 50.6 mpg approx

380 divided by 7 = 54.2 mpg approx (32 litres ish)

george

so im barely only getting 50 mpg!

This is what I mean by real world MPG. Zero the trip, fill up and next time you fill up devide the miles done by the litres used and thats your miles per litre, convert to MPG . Zero the trip and start again.

That's how I do the i10. Then over the months you can get a real average.

Just to add, I fill the tank till the nozzle clicks then do 3 more clicks every time I refill. Maybe I got OCD!

Not very good MPG's for the small cars..

Skoda Fabia vRS tsi, @ UK National speed limits.

(early cold morning driving tho)

Well, i can only speak from experience and i think the 60ps Citigo Greentech is very economical. I expect the PID is a bit optimisic, but if it always indicates between 60-75 (and the 75 was on a 90 mile journey on A-roads) then it's going to be well above 50 mpg.

I definitely find myself filling up less than i used in the Fabia 1.2 htp.
