DPF Regen

Featured Replies

How often does this happen?

Should I notice it?

I have seen on other people's threads that the DPF symbol lights up on the dash and you hear it burning the soot off.

BUT

Does the DPF regen automatically under normal driving and not indicate it happening?

I have not seen the DPF symbol, or experienced any of the symptoms of regen in 5500 miles. My wife had a juddery spell when the car was new (2 days old) in traffic in city driving, but nothing else.

Whats your driving style lyk??

On my Superb and old Octy we never got the light on unless there was a fault , you can tell when the regen happens normally the car runs a bit lumpy and doesnt feel quite right

The light should only ever come on if there is a problem and the regen is urgent. There are several type of regen, if you regularly do long drives it will do a 'passive' regen while you're driving and you'll not notice it happening. If it is doing an 'active' regen then it will alter the way the car runs, it'll feel a bit lumpy, sound different and idle at a higher engine speed than normal. Also if you turn the car off shortly after an active regen or interrupt it you will hear cooling fans staying on and be able smell it.

If the light comes on you must keep driving as per the instructions in your manual, it means that the DPF is starting to get blocked.

Hi,

How often it does a DPF is dependant on your driving style / how far you are driving etc. You should be able to notice it as;

There is an increases revs (Will rev above 1000)

The fan is alot louder. (I thought there was something wrong when it first happened!)

When Ive left the car as well there is a strong smell of burning rubber / soot.

Ive never had the light come on and I thought this was a sign that there was something wrong. It should just happen automatically and youll only notice it because of what I listed earlier. To me it sounds like your wife may have experienced it.

There is quite a good general explanation about DPF regeneration on the Wiki page http://en.wikipedia....ticulate_Filter It is mostly to do with heat through the exhaust system so if your journey includes a run where the speed is over 50mph for longer than 20 mins you will probably get enough heat in the system to run a natural regen cycle. If you are sitting in traffic or doing lots of in town/short trips the engine will have to force itself to run hotter (higher idle revs) to force the regen cycle. If you see the DPF warning light come on it means the system has not had a chance to perform a regen and the DPF is becoming clogged. The car is telling you it needs a good run or an Italian tune up :-)

Roger! I have experienced the burning rubber/brakes/clutch smell a couple of times and thought I'd been driving badly or left the handbrake on (although I checked and hadn't). That must have been it.

We had DPF on our previous Superb and the Octy before and never noticed it - maybe my driving patterns are normally good enough to allow natural regen. Thanks for the replies.
