Pulling to the left after tracking?

Featured Replies

Glad it's not just mine again! As said I raised my coilovers for it to be tracked, driving home it pulled very slightly, lowered it back down and pulled enough to have to hold the steering wheel. Now

I can't be bothered to raise it back up again to sort it out :(

Unfortunatly raising/ lowering the coilovers will effect the tracking in itself... so u shud set the tracking up at your ride height...

So raising the car to track it will defy the point of tracking it ;)

If it wont get on the ramp then u can get it tracked old skool on the floor with mirrors + a laser...

  • Drove a LHD Fabia in Crete on holiday and that pulled to the right. Go figure :p

  • any problems with my car (depending on cost to fix) become renamed features

  • mine always pulled to the left slightly, even after a laser alignment. tyres wore evenly, must just be a fabia thing lol

Yeh I knew it would not be perfect but hoped it would be better. It does get on the ramp with blocks of wood but the hooks that go over the tyres don't fit as there's no gap.

I might do that to be honest it's just I get it done for free that way and it's a mate so there's no hassle with sticking it back on for tweeks etc. When I've had it done the old way in the past it's always ended up terrible.

My mate who's a mechanic said theres a new system now which does not involve hooking the lasers over the top of the wheel. Anyone know a garage with this? Might help us lowered ones!

fabia steering straight. I know they can do it, but goodness knows how.

my 1.9tdi (not vrs) estate, pulled to the left. changed all the rubber parts, new rack, new tyres, countless tracking.(which fixed suspension clunking), but after doing the front shocks (standard pattern part from europarts), that made the most difference. - though its a pig to do yourself. - spring compressors hit the wheel arch when putting back in position so to get it put back together was a nightmare. left side was harder than right.

Amazingly it's now driving straighter than ever. but now my mk2 fabia follows left. FML

If you want a car to go in a straight line, by a ford, these foreign cards are just not designed to drive on the left is my current conclusion.

My VRS pulled left after lowering, went and got it 4 wheel aligned up at a local garage and it was better but not perfect. Went home jacked it up to look what the problem could be so i disconnected the anti-roll bar and then went and got it tracked up again. The result was perfect straight line driving, maybe yours could be the same issue?..

Update... Thanks to everybody that replied!! they told me today that they decided to take the shocks off and check the springs etc. said they couldnt see anything wrong so they put it back together and re-aligned the car and hey presto it was cured!

The steering wheel isnt quite central now and dont want to be pessamistic but it does sound abit to good to be true, but it does drive quite well now anyway. think im going to get it checked again tomorrow somewhere else for a second opinion that the tracking is spot on and the left wheel isnt pointing inwards or something like that to compensate for the pull.

To be fair to them they have been quite helpfull to sort the problem, just hope they havent bodged it.

Will keep everyone posted.

It probably needs the steering wheel putting back to where it was before they altered it, there is no way I would have let them alter the steering wheel to try and compensate for an obviously out of track car.

Anyway, very pleased to hear they have sorted it.

My thoughts too. will find out tomorrow when i get a specialist to track the car! should be interesting

But before you do, mention that the steering wheel is not in it's correct position, they may to do a lock to lock in order to ascertain the central position..

Well ive got the car booked in this morining to have all the angles checked by a hunter machine, should hopefully let me know if its all been sorted propley.

Myths:

1. VAG car pulls and its OK to do so.

2. Take steering wheel off to adjust if off centre.

Could I please everyone who thinks that way to stop spreading wrong information. Each of this statements is VERY untrue. If you dont beleave than please ask anyone who had done alignment/geometry adjustment by me at our place at Leeds.

Ref myth 1.

I would like to explain this one more time. VAG cars do have a lot of room on adjustment on subframe and each time you loosen bolts you change caster. Caster spread is what create pull. Even 0.25 deg difference can create pull. Most places adjusting toe-only and pull that comes out after it, is result of tyre pull. Sometimes a simple tyre rotation side to side fix problem.

Ref mytf 2.

New vehiles comes with steering angle sensor which is very sensetive and by messing with it, you risking problems with stability systems. Removal and adjustment of steering wheel is needed ONLY and ONLY if have disconnected steering rack from column. Otherwise all adjustment shoud be done on steering rods - PERIOD! If so called specialist or stealer is looking to fix problem by removing steering wheel, then please ask for your keys back, as one last thing you need is a monkey messing with your steering system.

If you are looking to sort problem at specialist garage - look for one that will look at your case like another challange not - another job, because they will fail. You already spent money with one place so I would expect 100% satisfaction promise. Simple. And reason why you might need to re-adjust after you have done a job because each car is different and best proove for that is that factory build so many cars by same robots/precedures and so many drives fine and other not. Afterall specialist is just a man and might make a mistake - re-adjustment is to make sure results suit customers expectation.

Put 4 new tyres on the car and it still pulls slightly left?

Bought a set of 17" spiders, put 4 new tyres on and it pulls left even more?

Taking the car to abc car garage in Leeds after seeing a lot of good feedback so hopefully they will be able to help.

BIG UPDATE!!! PROBLEM NOW DIAGNOSED

Big thankyou to ABC Car Service at Leeds!!!! :hi:

What can i say these guys make other garages pale in comparison,

After seeing reccomendations on here and other sites about theses guys I thought I would give them a go and thank god I did

Arrived this morning as arranged and was greeted by a very friendly bunch of guys, they made me a cuppa and chatted to me about the car and then suggested we take my car for a test drive.

Artur agreed with me that there was definatly a problem with the car pulling to the left and got the car straight on the ramps when we got back to the garage.

He checked all the mounts and bearings and ball joints basically any thing that could effect the steering, no stone was left unturned.

He hooked it up to his state of the art alignment machine and with some more visual checks he diagnosed the problem to be a bent rear axle / beam which is causing the rear wheel to be off camber and toe making it pull slightly to the left.

I was pleased he found the fault where 3 other garages had failed, including an accident repair centre and the Dealership I had bought the car from, but gutted that it was something so severe.

Artur then went on to adjust the front Camber and Castor and put them all perfectly aligned... this is something that is not usually done by most other garages i have noticed.

I am now getting a new rear beam fitted by the dealership if they keep to their word :wonder:

I really cant say how fantistic this place is, I would happly reccomend their services over the usual " we have done your tracking (toe only) so it should be fine now... pay here please!!!!" places.

They really go the extra mile till its sorted and they were very very resonably priced. Artur is a top top bloke.

Dont settle for the usual chestnuts like "its the camber of the road" or "the tyres are faulty" excuses i was getting palmed off with... if you have a problem and want it sorting propley then I guarantee you wont be dissapointed.

Getting my new rear axle and bushes fitted today!!! Can't wait to get my car back. Hopefully that will be the end of this pulling to the left thread.

Anyone got a spare can of petrol and a box of matches!!!!!!

Car still pulling to left... its had

Brandnew rear beam ( OEM)

2 new rear beam bushes ( OEM )

2 front wheel bearings

4 new tyres and also tried differnt alloys with 4 new tyres

Had all front toe / caster / camber adjusted perfectly

Car still wants to go left when you let go of the steering, its not the camber of the road as will do this on an advers camber also.

Car drives straight as long as you hold the wheel straight, as soon as you let go of the steering, the steering wheel wants to go slightly left and the car starts drifting left.

Im out of ideas... had all the suspension / bushes / track rod ends etc checked over.

Can anyone suggest anything else? Ill happily give someone a tenner if they have a solution that works .

Well there was me thinking it was just my car that did this - I didn't realise it was such a big common issue!

For some reason mine has got slightly worse with time. However.... I bought some 17" Spiders a while back, and it completely cured the problem.

Back on standard rims now and it's driving me mad. It's almost to the point of being dangerous, as if you lost concentration the car would potentially be in a ditch! Good job I'm getting some new rims again soon....

If It's ok on the spiders sounds like its a problem with your wheels or tyres.

Could it be a slight binding of the brakes (or individual brake) causing one side to pull?

You'd think that - but I've had new tyres on more than 1 occasion on them, and the car's always pulled slightly. For some reason it's started pulling more, even though it's been tracked perfectly. Strange, as the original alloys haven't had any impacts, and I've known the car most of its life....

Hoping that new alloys again will sort it. RS4 reps methinks :-)

your reply didn't cover the possibility of a binding brake though. Could be a possible cause...

This is getting really confusing now...

Put my standard wheels with new tyres on and the car drives fine.

Only pulls left when my spiders are on... They have new tyres all round also.

Decided to try the spiders on different corners to find out which corner is making the car pull left.

Put spiders on back and original wheels on front and car drives fine...

However when I put a spider alloy on front drivers side it pulls left.

Tried different spider alloy on front drivers side and still pulls left so its not the tyre or alloy that's defective

Spider alloy is a 40 profile so should be same stance as the original alloy.

Conclusion... Car pulls left when spider alloy is on front drivers side, shouldn't make a difference as same new tyre and lower profile to match the original alloy... Nothing wrong with the spider alloy as I tried one that's fine on the back and still pulls left.

Are your tyres directional? If not then swap them side to side. If pulls other way then you know its tyre related. If it corrects it then same conclusion but sometimes that is simple solution.

If those tyres are directional I would only advice to swap left to right for test and then swap back. At least you will know what cause that problem.

After dealership done work - did you align it again? Or was it just a case of driving after you left their workshop?

Can you provide print out of your alignment? Can you post it here?

Had another look....

Since having the new rear axle the car now drives almost perfect with the original alloys.

The spiders alloys are quite abit bigger than standard alloys even though they have a lower profile tyres so must be effecting the alignment.

Like your good advice says in going to get the wheels aligned to the new rear axle once my coilovers and spiders are fitted.

I'm getting a little lost with the order you've done things.

So you went to abc in Leeds and they lined it up perfectly, you then had a new rear beam fitted plus new wheels?

If that's the order you've done things, then i wouldn't be surprised at all! So much has changed since your alignment at ABC, of course it's going to be out.
