I've always said i wouldn't have a remap because it wasn't needed on the public roads but the more and more i read about them and the other advantages you can get, the more and more i'm feeling like getting one done, especially as i had a taste of Castle Combe and would like to do some more, even though i'll only go to a stage 1 remap (at the moment).

Now, Awesome are offering 170-175BHP for £150.00 and Shark are offering around 165BHP for £299.99.

Obviously, if i go by cost, i would go with the Awesome remap but i'd want was is going to be the best in the long run, savings on MPG, less need to change the clutch, turbo, etc.

A lot of people recommend Jabbasport as well but i can't seem to get any facts/figures from the website.

I'm just sticking my toe in the water at the moment to get a feel for the facts and figures but which remap would you go for???

I'm currently running a standard Mk1 vRS with the 312mm brakes and PD160 pipe as the real only 'upgrades'.

Thanks,

John

  • the tuning box i had before my jabba remap was r/r at 336lbft and 174bhp but again it was smoking like a ****, jabba remap 312lbft 174bhp no smoke and a extra 150 miles a tank

  • Shark! One of my mates has an Awesome remap and mine is much smoother and smokes ALOT less!

  • Plumes of smoke on a stage 1 map I'd call unnecessary.

I'm also in that dilemma, but at the moment in thinking I'll probably go to p-torque in Wolverhampton. A mate of mine had his Ibiza fr pd130 remapped there and got 179 horses as a result. The only problem the remap may have caused was when his boost pipe came away later that day on the m1 (he was visiting me at uni in Sheffield and remapped it on the way). After he fixed that though there were no more issues

Yep, I've been behind a couple of Awesome mapped cars and they smoke a LOT.

No quicker than my Shark mapped car with no other power mods :)

A lot of these threads seem to be popping up at the moment, a search will no doubt bring them up and offer a few insights; there are advocates of numerous site sponsors on here, so you'll probably never get a definitive answer.

Unit 18 is worth a thought, never had mapping done there but I've read plenty of excellent reviews on their maps and have had services and brake fitting carried out there in the past. I've always been impressed with their services and pleased by their pricing.

Personally, if I was in your shoes and wanting what you've alluded to, I'd pay a visit to Shark or one of their dealers. Don't forget that as a Freedom member, you will get a 10% discount from a Shark Performance Stage One map. I say this as most of my experiences with a tuner are with Shark and their products and services.

As I mentioned above, have a look through some recent threads for the views of others for a more informed choice; but my money would be spent at Shark.

Theres a reason why they smoke, and they shouldn't smoke...

Aweome remap! :D Sorry!! :p

The mapping we offer does not some excessively and would be classed as pretty much normal for a diesel car! Diesel burns dirty, to incrase the power you have to increase the fuelling which increases the smoke!

You don't get any poke without any smoke ;) hehe!

mines jabba, 174bhp 312lbft with no smoke

Mine's a Jabba custom and produced 177jhp (thats Jabba horsepower as it was done on their RR) and under extended periods of full throttle it smokes like it's on fire.

I was had a TT comlpetely disappear from my rear view mirror behind a James Bond-esque soot cloud when "having a play"

IMG_8676.jpg

Having spoke to Ali at Unit18 about it he suggested it may be overfuelling a bit - which follows what Mike has said - but to be honest it varies due to conditions (was super bad in the phto above cos it was such a hot day) and a dose of Millers used to calm it down.

Personally i'd suggest you get what you pay for.

The Forge plug and upload map on my old PD130 Ibiza was a massive spike of torque and power resulting in huge amounts of wheelspin but only cost a couple of hundred quid.

The Jabba custom map was £400 and is much smoother and progressive upping both power and torque curves throughout the rev range and powering harder for longer.

After a week on holiday and over 1000 miles in our standard black car last week getting back in the red car on Monday morning really showed where the standard map is lacking.

I've got the Shark stage 1 on mine, I've also got the STS gizmo.

Last week I've I re-flashed with the standard map and I must say I'm enjoying it. It seems smoother that the remap and I doubt that I will go back to the uprated map.

The trouble with these PD engines is the narrow band of torque and the maps out there only serve to exacerbate this to a smaller or greater degree.

Save your money and keep it standard.....or spend it on brakes

Shark stage 1 and STS device here, I have found it an improvement over standard including slight mpg increase, no excessive smoke in normal driving/full throttle but if you hang on the the revs so its close to the red line it smokes real bad.

Plumes of smoke on a stage 1 map I'd call unnecessary.

Did you carry out any diagnostics work on the car? If there was 'excessive' smoke it does not mean that it is the remap?

Either way I shall leave you guys to vote on this one - I must say I just wanted to be a little cheeky!! :D

I had Angel Tuning do mine - with my other mods i'm running 186bhp & 333lb/ft torque - not smokey at all (unless i'm in 4th at 50mph and I burry the loud pedal!)

If it smokes then its unburnt fuel. Whats the point of unburnt fuel

From factory diesels run learn so plenty of room for injecting more fuel without it smoking.

Yes diesels have a narrow torque band but this can be made wider if you don't go in the hunt for peak torque.

Mine's a Jabba custom and produced 177jhp (thats Jabba horsepower as it was done on their RR) and under extended periods of full throttle it smokes like it's on fire.

I said that in another remap thread and got bumed big style about it, black smoke mappers offering a remap for £65.

The top rpm power on my remap is epic it never looses go all the way to 5.5k I love it.

The nature of diesel fuel is that when it burns it gives off black smoke, please see below picture of a diesel fuel tanker that set on fire! HOLY MOLY!!!!

Many years ago when I was a lad  ... diesel lorries had an over-fueling system to aid starting. A "law" was passed to put the operating lever outside the cab so that they couldn't use it to help climb hills.

Black smoke = unburnt diesel bellowing out the exhaust, not only are you wasting fuel but it can't be good for the car in the long run.

One thing I would advise against heavily are the diesel tuning boxes which are readily available. I bought one from tdi tuning UK the other day, they have inside a small micro processor inside but at the end of the day it fits straight onto the fuel line sensor so it's sole purpose is to inject shed loads more fuel. I've taken it off the car now and I'm sending it back for a refund, the main reason being that the clutch can't take the power increase - put your foot down and the cabin fills with burnt clutch smell. Also it kicks out plumes of black smoke since I fitted the device.

I got no idea how much power it's putting down now but the acceleration is brutal, I was gob smacked with the increase!! Probably would have kept it on if it wasn't for the risk of frying the clutch..... how much power could cause the clutch to burn? it was worse in 6th gear from around 2500 rpm upwards.

Std clutch is normally good for 300lb/ft if its in good condition and you don't put your foot to the floor before 2500rpm.
