VRS Tyre Advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

The tyres on my VRS are getting to the end of their life so I need to think about getting some new rubber. I lost the back end the other day in the rain which wasnt much fun. In the past I've driven round in old sheds so never realy been bothered what I had and just used part worn tyres from a mate who is a scrappy but I think its about time I flashed the cash and treat myself to brand new rubber.

My work takes me to farms so I do a lot of driving down country lanes and farm tracks so I need I need something that will take some abuse and will be ok when the weather gets colder. I'm not too worried about road noise as I dont tend to do many motorway miles.

Any recomendations would be much apresated.

Phil

I still like Falken F452s....

Set of 4?

Goodyear Eagle Asym 2.

Falken 452s get my vote too

Although I think you should also think about getting a set of winter tires too

I've been thinking winter tyres would be a good idea, a lot of money to shell out though.

Not much point really. I know they work better at low temps but with our winters....

I have a set of winter tyres too. I work on the theory they don't cost me much more in the long run, as when I am running summer tyres, my winters aren't wearing down and during the winter the reverse is true.

I have a 120 mile round trip to work, so I prefer not to get caught out by the white stuff :-)

It's not a recommendation as I haven't fitted them yet (will be doing that tomorrow), but I just got a set of Hankook Optimo 4S.

I don't push my car hard or track it. Neither do I drive it every day, but I wanted something with a bit of extra winter bite. Time will tell if they're worth the compromise or not.

I like falken ze912

Never tried them, found the 452s really good then tried a pair of kuhmo 39s which wore out in under 6months so went back to 452s lol

just got myself a set of maxxis victra ma-z1 and for the money they seem very good dry and wet on the front and did have a set on the back but they were pretty much finished altho if its right the tyres have been on my car from last owner since 2007-2008 so done very well to last this long

Thanks for the advice chaps. I think I'll try and eek out the tyres I have on untill I find some winter tyres/wheels.

Was a set of steel wheels for 100 quid in the for sale section.

I was lucky got a set of rough golf alloys for mine for 40 quid lol

Conti sport contact 2's are the best tyre I've ever had for grip and all round weather conditions. I've had Dunlop SP sport maxx, Falken 912 and 452's, Toyos T1-R/T1-S, Goodyears F1's, Verdastiens sportrac(sp?). So I've had a few different makes and can say that conti's have been the best to date but I have been looking at some tyres for the summer that a few lads I know run and rate them. Federal 959r-sr they are like a road legal track tyre and are only £95 +delivery from camskill theses would only be for the summer as I run winter tyres.

If you don't care about ultimate performance in the summer and you spend a lot of time down lanes etc, why not get all seasons now?

I could recommend several awesome summer tyres, but I wouldn't recommend anyone fit brand new summers at this point in the year...

I have these, bit more hard wearing than the 452's but still fairly decent grip. :)

That's what I did. Got the Hankooks I mentioned earlier fitted today.

I'll give them 100 miles or so, and then I'll try to remember to let you all know what I think.

I have ze912's now. they are ok, well they were for stage 0, but for stage 2, PANTS! spin, spin, spin, 3rd gear in dry ant 4th in wet. Had 452's on my vectra 2.5 v6 got a whopping 25k out of them.

And the ZE's are wearing out on front already, only done 5k on them,....

Falken is a budget brand. End of.

I'm always amazed to see how many people spend a fortune on suspension upgrades and 18s, just to strap cheap rubber on.

Tomah, sounds like a plan. It's not like we actually get a winter or a summer in this country. It's a wonder more people in the UK don't run all season tyres.

Mid range brand imo, they are a fairly good tyre. Certainly no ditch finders. :)

Speak to a tyre monkey that don't stock them and they'll say it's a cheapo brand and that the lethal ditch finders they do sell are better and the boss runs them on his m3 lol

Now speak to a tyre fitter with some experience and knowledge that may have them in stock and they'll say to you they are midrange or upper midrange lol

Just coz they're a decent price doesn't mean they are budgets lol

I've had Nexen N6000's fitted for the last 3 years (now on my 2nd set of 4), so two heavy winters and I never had a problem with traction, but just a good if you push on in the dry.

I get a good deal through Chris Mullins Tyres in Gloucester (he sponsors my rally car), but Black Circles etc aren't that expensive.

Highly recommended.

So just because something isn't the cheapest, that makes it acceptable?

If you like Falkens and they do what you want - great. But until you've tried the best from Michelin, Goodyear, Vredestein and Hankook you've not seen the full potential of your car IMO.
