motorway mpg....

Featured Replies

What's everyones motorway consumption like? mine's really bad! i'm getting high 40s / low 50's if i'm lucky but on the normal 30/40mph road it seems pretty good!

80 mile round trip, showing over 72 to the gallon. Overall average 55.5, but only done 300 miles.

i've done 1200 miles now, getting no way near that :( tried resetting etc and looked at the live mpg

I'll tell you better later when I fill up. On a recent motorway 250 mile round trip the display showed outward journey 66mpg, the return 62. Now i was keeping to around 65mph most of the time and did some A road driving as well at around 40/50mph. The car is still being run in and just ticked over to 400 miles.

Out of interest has anyone been running their car on Shell fuelsave or vpower.....should do more more mpg than on asda type fuel

Yes. Run on Shell V power from day 1. :)

Now just over 1000 miles getting around 440 miles between fuel stops.

Running well now and likes to rev.

Average to date is indicated 60.2mpg (in real terms it's 57.4mpg) on a mixture of 70% motorway/fast A road, 30% town and slow driving.

If I drive at 60mph I can get a little over 60mpg, if I drive at 70mph it drops to around 56mpg(ish).

Best I've seen indicated on a trip of over 40 miles is 72mpg, which I'd estimate was around 67mpg in real terms.

But I was driving in very boring eco mode. Not doing that too often! :D

I can't understand buying something like that at all! My Octavia always returns 65mpg, no matter what, with my careful driving its mostly over 70mpg, its bigger, more powerful, comfy. Ok maybe its 70 quid a year more on tax but over a year ill have saved that on fuel.

Don't get me wrong I really like the little car, just could never buy one knowing what I could be driving for same if not less costs. Drove a 1.9 pd 105 passat other day a lot newer than mine and still got 68mpg. It was an estate.

Am I missing something?

And I am taking real terms mpg by the way

Am I missing something?

At a guess...It's a diesel, small cars serve a purpose over larger cars in and around town, the road tax is free, the insurance is cheaper, the depreciation on a Citygo will be less than a similar Octavia, some people want a new car without paying a fortune, some people don't want an old car, the modern version of your car (which has a DPF, not good in town) is noticably more expensive than a Citygo which you can get with a 5 year warranty and three years free servicing?

+1 to what Richard says & there is no congestion charge on the CitiGo either.

I went on a drive to Lakeside/Thurrock with 1 passenger (straight up the M2 to the dartford crossing then to thurrock and back as i live in chatham) for the entire trip i got an average of 67mpg with a boot full of shopping, spare wheel and a passenger. The first time i did that same trip, i had no passenger, little shopping and had the repair kit not a spare wheel. That time i had a overall Mpg of 70.2.

The traffic in the two instances were very different too. Thurrock was a lot busier second time around, but the first time i went i spent about 30 min in slow stop start traffic at the crossing (both ways)

That makes perfect sense. I forgot about the London area charges etc. I live in country and of course travel is higher speed and more miles, so its no sense me having one. However I can see the benefit in cities and such.

Enlightening, thanks for not getting bitchy about it, you obviously saw my genuine interest.

For different reasons, and the above.

I find the Citigo easier to park (especially at work, was very awkward) very good down our local country lanes, and best of all it fits in my garage.

Well my consumption was 52mpg, that's filling up using it to the fuel light comes on then filling again. Happy with that, I'm sure it will improve as I get some miles under it's belt. I used Asda fuel and never really used the stop/start system much at all. My next test will be to always use the stop/start system and see how it goes, it will be very short journeys though, no motorways. After that I will try some Shell V power in it.

My problem is i do short 15 minute driving commute twice a day, catching the back of the bus in the morning and catching the end of the school traffic coming home. my trip indicates most days i have an mpg of 30-50 going to or from work (the 30 is because its all uphill and the 50 going down again lol).

Not the best but when i do long journey's thats when it comes into its own, a recently went to folkstone in convoy with a freind, i had well in excess of 60mpg they had barely 40 (they have a 1.2 2008 clio)

Ive only ever put asda fuel in it, i'll try vpower next and see if there is a difference!

Hopefully they should improve.

I'm happy with what I've been getting, but every car I'd had has got better economy as the miles have got up near 6-10k. Usually by 5-10%.

I have/had a Scirocco Blue Motion. Blinding motor great performance, nice to look at good to drive - long term MPG 59. What am I changing to? A Citigo Elegance 75. Average MPG of the new may be circa 59, may be a bit more or a bit less. That isn't really gonna make much difference. Tax isn't much different either 30 versus Zero. But the real difference is that my car only gets used to commute 6 miles (3 each way) when the weather is bad as I prefer bikes. So to buy the Rocc was £242 a month and 6.5k in depreciation over time I had it plus interest etc. The Citigo costs £138 and the dep will be considerably less. If we need to do a long journey my Mrs has a Yeti. For me it's a no brainer and the Citigo is as much fun to ride round town as the Rocc. It depends on individual circumstances as what option/ transport makes sense for you.

There seem to be quite a few Yeti owners that also have (in the family) a Citygo. :)

Aye my Mrs would never drive the Rocc but the Citigo she will so its a better balance/useful set up now. We are buying the Citigo because we are so impressed with the Yeti and the Dealer.

Same with us, except we don't quite have the Yeti yet.

I get an indicated 60-74 mpg for "normal" driving, about 60 mph after a motorway blast.

I use Shell fuelsave.

Similar opinion here. I traded down from an Octavia Vrs chipped to 230bhp. Besides the savings to my wallet I genuinely prefer driving the Citigo over the Octavia. It's more fun.

meh, just done a 50 mile round motorway trip got 56mpg average, and i've done 1500 miles now in the car hmmm,

doing 60mph

Cars hardly ever achieve the claimed figures because the conditions for test and real life are so different. However the test conditions are important so that direct comparisons can be made between different makes. The Citigos are generally achieving very good figures and if I achieve a long term average in the 50's I will be happy. Try not to get too hung up on it and enjoy the drive. It won't achieve it's best mpg until somewhere between 5 and 10k. There are many cars out there that aren't getting anywhere near the Manufacturers figures. The Citigo does quite well.
