quattro vs 4 motion

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me which is better...

...real quattro... i.e the one with the torsen diff....and 4 Motion ie. the Haldex diff one.

Just wondering. ;)

You not looking for a Evo anymore then adrain running cost to extreme for you.:D

The real one is better, hence it is called "the real one".

Hope that helps :D

A bit like the umm.........no I'm not going there. :D

the haldex is better for economy as its auto-part-time but the torsen system is better at keping you straight

That's gotta suck when you wanna go round a bend

Also 'quattro' sounds better imho and I guess it's a VAG trademark, whereas with Haldex I've got a feeling it's more generic (although probably still trademarked by Haldex themselves, but I digress)

haldex is called quattro when it's on Audi's.

Ok..lets add a little meat to the bones now....

....what are the benefits of quattro over 4 motion?

Some info in an old thread here.

having driven both i would say the real Quattro, not S3 or TT haldex.

but then im biased i drive the real version every day!, PS economy is just as good as my vRS, at worste its one or two mpg down but ive noticed the opposite at the moment

So to recap... if its got a longitudial engine ie A4/Passat upwards. it has real torsen Quattro

if its got a transverse engine (Golf/tt/octy) then its got fake quattro haldex :D

...as I understand it. :D

Thanks for posting up thread Eddy....and Mattijs for writing.

I think Rob (Fabpreza) posted that the latest quattro has the most grip he has experienced..... of the 4x4 systems he's driven but not the most fun.

So..although not implied by Rob....is Halddex more fun that quattro?

Is quattro more consistant in how is deals with situations than Haldex?

I know some of our 4x4 owners have had some interesting moments due to the system.

Can't remember the figures but I believe Haldex has a limit WRT torque it can handle. Does quattro have a higher limit...I'm assuming so due to the power/torque generated by the S/RS models...although I have no idea whether the drive train is beefed up in any way to handle.

i understand that the torswen is tronger but we have also heard that the haldex is fairly strong too. the haldex can be fun at times, if you go round a corner gentily then boot it the fronts spin so the car transfers power to the rear. because of the sudden surge of power at the back it can kick it out, even in the dry when chipped. all this is with esp off btw

I've had a couple of 'real' quattros...

The road holding is excellent, but the fuel economy is atrocious... I struggled to get 250 miles from a 70l fuel tank on my last Coupe...

I traded it in against the Fabia vRS, and the savings I made in fuel costs almost pay for the car....

im getting 30-38mpg on my A4 1.8Tquattro, similar to my octy on same journeys

IIRC the uprated "Sports" Haldex controller that is available locks the centre diff @ 60%rear 40% front..

Awesome GTI have fitted this to some TTs, and have great fun drifting them round roundabouts. :D

Nope, doesn't do that at all. It works like standard but takes more note of throttle position etc.. to try and come in earlier and also more aggresively. Doesn't change the split at all though and certainly doesn't have a permanent lock as that's not possible on haldex due to how it works.

I used to have an Audi Quattro

Slightly off topic,

I Had an Impreza which is permanent 4 wheel drive, great grip, managed to spin all the wheels a few times pulling away but the sideways hops at 100+ scared the **** out of me & economy , what economy

Haldex on the 4x4, had no scary moments & I must be lucky but I find it fine, the esp when driving sensibly has helped me out of a couple of sudden panics enduced by the driving of other ***** . Switch it off on the track & :):):)

not bad at all....

btw - liking the use of Matchbox 20 too ;)

cheers mate, at the moment the audi is having better mpg than the octy

well spotted mate, not many folk have ;)

i agree mine works a treat too, i was just saying that if wanted you can induce fun but it has never happened on its own. yet. esp has saved me a couple times too when knobs have randomly cut across me

Driving a Quattro makes you marginally less of a poof than the 4-Motion.

That's the only real benefit as far as i can see :D
