What is a hybrid turbo?

Featured Replies

As title. I'm led to believe that it's just a standard turbo. Forgive me if I'm wrong but it's bugging me now and I would like to know lol cheers

My understanding is that it's taking the standard casing and shoving bigger compressors/internals into it to give more power/realiabilty.

A hybrid turbo is one made by combining various OEM and/or custom turbo components to produce a more powerful unit, which will fit into the existing engine/pipework setup

Normally along the lines of swapping housings, compressors wheels, etc, etc depending on application

AFAIK it's the turbo and manifold connected as one unit, rather than separately. Crude explanation, but no doubt you'll get a better one soon :)

Turbo and Manifold are as one unit, this is not why it is a hybrid though ;) See andypandypoos post below and indeed Snow Munchers post above

Correct!!

that's not even approaching correct - a hybrid turbo is pretty much as it sounds - a hybrid made up of parts from numerous sources, nothing about the turbo being cast with the manifold (that is the case with both turbos above)

My Bad. Mis-read ljp's post. Now corrected.

Wow thanks for enlightening me guys , how much roughly would it cost to get hybrid? Cheers

I was partially correct, that's why I put the AFAIK bit before and the bit about someone else will know better :D ah well, learnin' every day ;) How's things? All good I hope:)

Indeed thanks Lee. Looking forward to cracking on with 'Project Fast Roomster' B)

Thanks from me for this thread. I've always wondered what a Hybrid turbo was, as everybody is going on about them.

Now I know.

Couple of pics of the bits that are changed to larger "hybrid" parts when hybriding a turbo

So other than not having to change the pipe work, does this also mean you can keep the same intercooler and air intakes? Or is it still best to upgrade them?

U have to upgrade the intercooler.. because the internals are bigger + after a map it will be making more power it also gets hotter... so req better cooling to prevent it overheating.
