Wifi Tablet

Featured Replies

Hi,

Need some advice on a christmas present.

Want to get a family member a tablet type device which would be used for browsing the internet mainly.

Wifi is essential, not really that clued up about things like this but a good battery life would be excellent too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

What budget did you have in mind?

There are some reasonable Android based tablets for around £100.

Nexus 7 - excellent performance and good battery life. £199.00 for the 16gb version.

I wouldn't spend anything less than £200 on a tablet. The quality just won't be up to scratch.

The Nexus is a nice bit of kit. It's that halfway size between a phone and a full 10 inch tablet.

Budget wise wasn't too sure, didn't want to spend too much but if it was something more expensive then I could get someone to go in on it with me!!

I'll have a look at the Nexus then

Any more suggestions at all?

Galaxy tab is a good shout.

Wait for the Kindle Fire HD. It's out on the 24th of this month.

7" screen, good spec all round, £159 for the 16gb version (I've preordered one for SWMBO for xmas).

And they can be sideloaded so any stuff you have on your PC (videos, music, ebooks) and be transferred across to it.

Nexus 7 is a wee cracker. 7 Inch size is much nicer than 10. Kindle is fine if you want to stick with amazon content but the nexus apparently whips it in most other regards.

And the 16gb is £179 in the airport if you know anyone flying any time soon. Bought one on Thursday for a colleague when I flew back from Manchester

I wouldn't want to use anything much smaller than an iPad for web browsing - you need to see enough of a web page at once with decent sized text.

iPad perhaps? If it's just for web browsing then the iPad2 Wifi will be fine, and you can use them for other means too, I got one for uni and it's fantastic. Barely uses any battery, fast and has a very good keyboard, but if you want a proper one you could always bluetooth one up

i just got my 10 year old a ZTpad. (andriod) 10.2". only comes with a 4gb card but £8.99 from play.com got me a 32 gig card. It has wifi, Bluetooth, HD screen the lot. It was his Birthday yesterday and hes been on it constant playing high graphic demading games non stop! we have charged it twice since 8am yesterday!!!

Im quite picky when it comes to home audio/tv etc and i always tend to get the high end gear... this tab. £130 posted!! It does everything a ipad does, its responsive, screen response is spot on. it runs a live wallpaper, game, msn and loads of other stuff in the back ground and does not hesitate a bit! i thought for a 10 year old even if it was a little slow it would be fine but im super impressed.

Im now going to buy her 1 for xmas and me one too prob just for when im bored at work. Just goes to prove that you can get a well built good quality tablet for not very much money at all!

I travel a lot, 7 Inch much better on planes etc

Bought SWMBO an ipad2 wifi only,( shoppped around the net for best price) approx 3 months back she wasn't completely sure about it as she had a laptop.

So after spending a few weeks with it & taking it on holiday, Kindle app loaded along with a couple of other useful apps/games & the laptop is now virtually redundant as its hardly used.

Having had an Android tablet & SWMBO currently having the iPad I would recommend you think about which you buy, specially as the iPad automatically updates, & the Android tablets don't.

The thinking with the android tablets is that they wont spend any money updating as they are so cheap to buy, there is an expectation that you can just chuck it way & buy a new one with the latest android version. OR you get a ROM of the latest version from the internet & load that on.

I have a Blackberry Playbook (32GB) and love it. Have sideloaded the Kindle App onto it and works perfectly with my Blackberry Phone.

Just wanted something small, portable and reasonably priced for web browsing etc, and it does this perfectly.

And if you wait until the end of the month there may be an iPad mini to throw into the mix.

Think it depends on whether you go for a decent brand. Wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus recently updated to ICS although I have no idea if it will ever see Jelly Bean. I am aware that the new IOS is not compatible with some older devices (so they won't get upgraded) so the situation is very similar with Apple. Nexus devices follow upgrade paths closely so will generally be up to date.

Not really sure about this throw it away as it isn't on the latest OS malarkey. Gingerbread still does everything needed - ICS is not a massive difference. Jelly Bean adds some useful apps but nothing worth changing device for. I still run both XP and Vista PCs as they still do what I want them to without Windows 7 (or 8).

Just be aware that there is apparantly another shortage of 9.7" IPS screens in China which is affecting a number of tablet manufacturers...

Android apps automatically update whereas ios apps don't. Agree with you about the os though, people stress about not having the very latest thing. They never stop to think whether their existing products still work effectively

Also you can choose which apps auto-update. Definitely saves a lot of hassle when new versions of apps have bugs or issues

Just get a ipad2

Sent from my apple :)
