How long will my 1.9D 2005 Octavia last?

Recommended Posts

Hi

my Octavia has just passed 180,000km (I live in Switzerland) with most components still original.

Apart from replacing the timing belt at 130,000 km, the air-con last year & the front discs 6 month back, ALL other parts are original. Clutch, shock absorbers, exhaust etc etc have never been changed & are still in good condition (just passed the equivalent of the MOT)

Now I'm wondering how long to keep the car & when I can expect repair / replacement costs to rapidly increase.

Thanks

Paul

My son still has my old 1998 Octavia 1.9 TDI and it is still going strong at nearly 189,000 miles. Only replacements, apart from normal service items, have been new discs all round, a new battery, hand brake cable assembly, clutch pedal linkage and new electric window mechanisms all round. It has been serviced annually, still returns over 55 mpg and has yet to fail an MOT!

I wonder if the newer Octavia models will last as well......

Just replaced a bad earth wire on a 99 AHF at 601k miles.

The owner keeps a list.

The only non-service items replaced were...

*battery

aux tensioner

*aux belt

ARB bushes

rear console bushes

3 window regulators

driver side window motor

*MAF

relay 109

hazard/flasher unit

*glowplugs

*front shocks

earth strap

* items didn't fail - were replaced due to age.

Not sure how long yours will last but I think a realistic expectation for a modern car would be 20 years / 250000 miles, (lots should and do get more),

which is which is why I find the motoring press' idea of a long term test / long term reliability to be laughable.

Unfortunately I fear the premature introduction of immature untested technology will see life expectancy and long term reliability fall.

Imagine how long cars could last for if designers put life expectancy and reliability a bit further up their priority list. - but then again not much incentive to do this.
