Does Autoglym SRP go off?

Featured Replies

Day off, nice weather, on me own (well almost), so I thought I'd take me time and give the Superb a proper (amateur) wash, polish and wax.

When it came to polishing, no matter how much I shook the SRP (It's probably 5+ years old), there was a really high water-like content coming out as I was applying it. Almost like it was separating as I put it on the car (with clean mutton cloth).

I'm not totally happy with the finish, so thought I'd give it a clean water rinse in the morning then dry it off and see it that removes any of the water droplet type marks. I've got Megs detailer spray - could I use that?

Hoping to get at least one wax coat on tomorrow.

Well I suppose I was being a bit naive in thinking polish should last forever

So should I remove it, and if so what with?

And I thought SRP was supposed to be a decent polish.

It's funny coz I've a similar aged Zymol (the coconut smelly turlewax one) which seems fine.

Now I'm gonna have to check my Megs Carnuba Wax before it goes anywhere near the car, although it's only just over a year old, so I'm optimistic about a wax coat.

a good wax i use is Collinite 845 and although i wouldnt call it a "show" wax it is very durable especially if multi layered

http://www.detailedc...nsulator-wax-12

stand the bottle in warm water for 10-15 mins and shake well until it goes like milk

it is then a lot easier to go on

I've certainly seen Collinite mentioned a lot. Doubt I'll ever own a 'show' car, so durable works for me

Meantime I need to resolve my polish woes first.

dodo juice lime prime is good

i have just used it on the boss's Range Rover and it did a very good job

if you want a sample of the Collinite i will send you a bit to try if you wish?

no need to resolve anything my friend just use the zymol cleaner wax , its as good as super resin then put some wax on top of that, for winter durability i recommend collinite 476.

although this kit is perfect for shine and durability http://www.cleanyour...t/prod_408.html

So maybe I ought to scrap the SRP idea and go for the Zymol? Certain the current SRP (which was inherited - literally - btw) is for the wheelie bin tomorrow. And I've a feeling I have another unopened SRP in a Xmas pressie kit from last year.

I can't go out to a Pub Quiz Night next Tuesday as it's my daughter's 17th, so that's Furn's kit suggestion validated

I'm in the middle of a week off, using up annual leave, and am already wondering how on earth I have time for a full-time career when there's so much car cleaning to do

Thanks for the offer - muchas gracias

Think I'll go for Zymol, followed by Carnuba Wax tomorrow. Then I might try catching up with the modern world next time I sneak a bit of self indulgent time off :nerd:

SRP is good, especially for a hand polish. It's got lots of fillers, so will reduce visible swirling. Gives a nice finish too, but won't last long. Best to use a couple of coats of SRP then some good wax/sealant over the top.

What about AG Extra Gloss Protection, would that do to go on after the SRP?

AG EGP is an ideal sealant on top of SRP, it's specifically formulated to bond with SRP. Trick to applying it is to very thin and leave it as long as possible to cure (if you have a garage think 12 hours plus), and pop two coats of it on.

Remember that SRP is a filler heavy polish (okay so technically it's an AIO but it really doesn't have much durability), I'd say it's probably one of the best polishes for hand application, although it is very dusty and will mark textured plastics and any rubber.

Some of the other products that have been mentioned in this thread have been waxes and sealants, which serve a different purpose, they won't correct the finish much, they're more for protection and hence cannot be considered an alternative to SRP. The exceptions would be Zymol Cleaner Wax, but I think SRP is superior personally. Dodo Juice Lime Prime I believe offers a little more cutting ability (i.e. permanent correction) than SRP, but I've never used it.

Sorry to be a pain...but two coats of EGP on top of two coats of SRP...is that all that's necessary...no wax needed?

Many thanks.

Mike.

OK....My three peneth:

This is based on experience......

1. Forget Autoglym products..there are better ot there..EGP is poor as well

2. Zymol cleaner polish is awful stuff..it leaves a high chalky residue..Ditch that suggestion too....IMO of course

So..."What shall I get?" I hear you say?

Get this:

CarLack68 AIO polish/sealer with Nano technology..No need for a wax, just apply again after 6 weeks or so....OR

Add Collinite 845 on top and reapply the wax in 3 months

Both here:

i have some carLack 68 coming tomorrow

i found the 845 lasts longer than 3 months but i do tend to layer it 2 or 3 times over 2 or 3 weeks

DW (detailing world) is a good site and they are not too bad on beginers but get ready to spend money because i have found it very addictive

Yup, and lots of praise on there for SRP/EGP combo :)

i think at the end of the day its what YOU find works for YOU

i like to try new things but the colour of the car can make a big difference as well

i suppose its whether or not you intend to clean, valet or detail

time is also a big factor as i tend to take a full day on my car

Rain stopped play yesterday and when I went out this morning it looked like I'd not buffed off the polish - which I had. So it serves me right I suppose. I am a total amateur at this btw, and I am only looking to keep it clean. A valet and detail is something I'll ask someone else to do next year so it'll get done properly.

So I'm going to wash it again tomorrow (Megs Gold Class) weather permitting - car lives outside - and start again. I do have a new, sealed SRP bottle so will give that a go and let you know how I get on. Here's a pic from this morning after heavy rain last night:

Thanks Chris - I've taken your advice and have ordered the Carlack68 and Collinite 845

regarding the 845 remember to stand it in warm/reasonably hot water (with the lid on!) then shake well, it should go like milk and then it is easier to get on

just remember if its a cold day it will be a little harder to get off although personally i find it quite easy to remove

the trick is not to put too much on in the first place

Cheers BMH - I'd noted to use warm water when you'd mentioned the Collinite 845 earlier in the thread

It was raining heavily again earlier, now it's stopped and the sun's out, so I've just washed and rinsed it and all the duff polish marks have gone. Drying it off and get a call from my wife to pick her up as the garage are keeping my son's Polo over the weekend. Perfect timing with the amount of surface water, it's three miles to the garage and it now looks like I've driven it through a swamp.

Hey ho - Im glad I'm not into detailing coz I'd probably be crying by now :dull:

Fingers crossed that the weather holds next weekend so I can play with the new stuff.

You don't even need two coats of SRP in my experience, just put one coat of SRP down but work it in well, then EGP twice and leave it to cure as long as possible before buffing it off, the longer you leave it to cure the longer it will last on the paint. One coat if EGP is fine, it just doesn't last as long.

You don't need wax on top of EGP, it's a sealant. Sealant and waxes do the same job, they protect the polished finish underneath, but they go about it in different ways. Having said that, you can put wax on top of most sealants if you want, and you might see a slight improvement in finish. Generally you can't put a sealant on top of a wax though, they don't tend to bond to the oily surface well.

SRP/EGP works well as a combination, EGP is not so brilliant on top of other polishes. A good all-purpose sealant is FinishKare FK1000P, if you prefer a wax then Collinite 476S or 845 get good marks. And of course there are a myriad of other products fellow posters have mentioned, ultimately as has been said it depends what works for you and the paint on your car.

Thanks, ckyliu. Just to be clear...are you saying one coat of SRP and 2 coats of EGP?

Yes I am, sorry I'm getting lost in all the abbreviations! Edited the posted now to read correctly.

Abbreviations are a nightmare especially on detailing world! Takes a while to get used to and work them out! I think tthe trouble is us blokes love to use abbreviations whenever we can!
