Wheel bearing or uneven tyre wear? VRS II tfsi

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've had a wheel bearing type rumble on the O/S/R wheel on my 56 plate mk2 vrs now for a couple of weeks. I have had the car jacked up this afternoon and there appears to be no play on the rear hub/wheel, however the tyre (Dunlop) on that wheel appears to have worn fairly significantly on the inside edge.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with his 08 plate vrs tdi and the local stealer told him it was down to uneven tyre wear, he changed the tyre and the noise went away. However, he reckons that mine is louder than his.

Are there any definitive ways to check a rear bearing other than checking for play? The tyre is still legal so don't want to replace it only to find it was a bearing with the big guy in the red coat being due in a couple of months if you know what I mean lol.

Cheers

Chris....

This is a surprisingly common problem, the uneven tyre wear is caused by poor wheel alignment of the back axle. Change the tyres and get a full 4 wheel alignment done using the revised settings that any decent alignment place should have, then you should be good to go.

Put your spare on and go for a run see if that makes a difference..

I had a small bulge on a tyre on a previous car that made a lot of rumbling

If it doesnt change in noise level if you are going round corners, putting more weight on 'that wheel' it is unlikely bearings.

Far more likely, as said, incorrect settings and as a result you get saw-toothing on the tread blocks = tyres screwed.

Get some new tyres, then have a good 4 wheel laser alignment done on a machine like hunter or similar.

As above.

Type 'saw toothing' into the search bar and be amazed at the number of related threads!

Hi,

This company is very good and use the hunter system for 4 wheel alignment and I would also ask your friend if he has had a 4 wheel alignment done as all that willl happen is the rear tyres will just wear again if not done properly

For the record I had a rear wheel bearing go on mine, the noise is very loud. No play at all, but when it was taken off it had almost seized up.

My money would be on alignment given the tyre wear.
