Rear Bumper And Sill Paint Damage

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys and Gals,

i am new here, in fact this is my first post! i have browsed the forums for ages but it is only now i feel i need to ask advice/share my story as i cannot find anything about it anywhere on the net.

they say a photo says a thousand words so i have about 1 million words coming up in photo format.

i have noticed this damage on my rear bumper and front sills and doors and it seem to be coming from debris/salt from the road and for want to a better phrase sandblasting the paint from my car! the car is still under warranty and i am currently trying to get Skoda to acknowledge that is it an issue, hence the photos i have to send to them. i have had to take my own photos as the dealer was next to useless and couldn't manage to capture the damage on their camera. the current status of the situation is i am awaiting a paint depth reading to determine if they will repair it under warranty or not. my argument is it looks awful and even if the paint passes their depth checks it looks awful and should be repaired anyway.

when the car was new it had the care pack option this included mud flaps, rubber mats, and paint protection amongst other things. it looks to me like the mud flaps are creating an aerofoil causing a vortex to pull debris towards the cars body, but that's just my thoughts. i would love to hear yours.

i should add that the car is a 59 plate (november 2009) and had done 30k

thanks for the replys guys,

i will keep you updated on the outcome. i dont understand how the dealer couldnt manage to get photos of the damage to send to skoda, they had me sit and wait for 2 hours whilst they tried. they come back to me and said that the engineer has tried to get images but couldnt see any damage!!!! it was only when i took the engineer to my car (that had not even been moved) and pointed to the damage he said it just looked dirty!

ill let you know how i get on

Are you sure this is paint damage as there is white paint on the inside of the mudflaps.

Have you done what I did recently and ran into white paint spilt on the road which caused the same spray pattern that you have experienced?

I cleaned it off with clay bar and and good polish afterwards with no ill effects.

If this is the case I can understand why the dealer may have considered it dirty.

Just a thought !

Hi ddyer79,

i think the white on the mud flaps is where i have not removed the polish 100% i have tried to polish it out and i did try some G20 in a very small area and it made no difference :( also when the damage is wet it is very difficult to see. i think one of the images has a drip of water running down it that kinda shows that?? its as if the lacquer has been removed. the best way i can describe it is like a frosted window, when you wet a frosted window it becomes more transparent if that makes sense??? i have not tried a clay bar yet but when it goes to the paint specialist for depth checks if it is white paint i am sure they will let me know and i can go back to my hole all embarrassed for kicking up a fuss lol

just an update,

i have just got back from the skoda approved body shop, they have taken paint depth readings and confirmed that it is not overspray from a bad repair (it turns out this was the reason for the depth readings) the chap also said "did you expect to buy a car and never get stone chips" he also confirmed that it is more than likely that it is an aerofoil drawing debris into the bumper as he has seen this a lot, especially in the new Mercedes as they have 2 dips on the bonnet and the centre of the 2 dips gets peppered because of the aerofoil they create. and a lot of new cars suffer from this because of the aerodynamic design. my response was that does not make it rite.

anyways thats the update so far
