Winter tyres.... do I need them

Featured Replies

If only I could find out for myself! I've been trying to get a set of Continental TS830 in 215/60 R16 and failed dismally. If anyone knows of some actually in stock (as opposed to advertised as being available) then I'd appreciate a message. Many thanks.

Got mine recently from www.mytyres.co.uk

They were delivered within a few days directly from Germany.

There are two types TS 830 and TS 830P with different tread patterns

The TS 830's are unidirectional so you have to take note that the direction of rotation arrows on the tyres are correct for nearside and offside, when I got mine from Mytyres they were all mounted in the same orientation which meant a trip to my local tyre fitter to get two of them flipped for the near side and to get the rotation arrows pointing forwards. Make sure you check, or you end up with less grip on one side of the car.

TS 830P is not unidirectional so like the summer tyres the Yeti came with it can be mounted on near or offside.

For those unsure of what a unidirectional tyre is, page 220 of Skoda Yeti owners manual explains

  • I'm just in the process of sorting out a set for my Mother's Yeti - will go for 17s (Dolomites) to maintain the look and probably Vredestein Wintracs which I have experience of. I have a big X5 mysel

  • I think that there is not a lot of point in going for a 4x4 and then not having winter tyres.

  • I'm in the same position as you, I can avoid going out in bad weather. I decided I could do without winter wheels/tyres and spend the money saved on more wine!

Don't forget the snow chains for your boots, unless you intend to pole dance around your walking stick

These are an amazing UK invention. My wife has them on her sticks and has not slipped once - shock absorbing as well.

Just seen the weather forecast.

Oooo Err; be careful and may the Force be with you.

Turned out to be a little better weather than expected but glad to be back on winter rubber; yes the new Monte has already exchanged her sprinting shoes for hiking boots :giggle:

Hi Tim - like to know how will you feel about the 17" wheels on the Monte Carlo compared with your current 16" wheels?

Only drove about 90 miles if that on the 17" rims with 205/40 elastic bands, before switching to 15" winters. Strangely though the sports suspension and large rims seem to suit the little Fabia, particularly the lightweight petrol version. Prefer how it feels to the previous Elegance with standard suspension and 16" rims with 205/45 tyres. Obviously not designed with the comfort of the Yeti in mind but quite fun to push along the country lanes, as the sports seats are very suportive and theres little roll round bends etc.

Regards,

TP

I guess the "Winter tyres do I need them" topic has been abandoned then ? :notme:

They saved my bacon today. The bottom of our road slopes quite sharply to the main road junction. Sun had cleared all the road except those 20 yards. I stopped without a problem. Well worth the money
