Hi I'm pretty new to diesels and have a question.

I'm aware that turbos whistle but should they be whistling on idle?

What you might be hearing there is the EGR valve opening. It can give a slight whistle sound sometimes. I have especially noticed this on mine since changing the EGR requested ammount. Maybe because it doens't open as much and so the air whistles through it slightly I don't know.

If idle for a few minutes the engine noise changes on mine and starts whistling.

Yes like I say I believe it is the EGR valve opening and closing.

I have read many people reporting this so must be normal.

my BLT engined car does it as does my girlfriend's ASZ engined car, i assumed it was normal too and a year later we've both got no problems.

I was told its the veins in the turbo opening. Mine whistles when it idles. Blip the throttle and it goes but comes back after a min or so.
