Any ex-Mk1 VRS owners miss their car?

Featured Replies

I'm getting increasingly tempted by a nearly-new mk2 VRS now my 4 year finance is over on my Mk1.

It's an 06 Black Magic, un-modded, has 87k on it now, has a bit of DMF chatter, a slightly juddery clutch, starting to use a bit of oil between services. All my sensible impulses say to keep running it and enjoy no monthly payments / budget for potential future repairs. It does everything I want it to do, and has been reasonably hassle-free motoring for 4 years.

But 4 years is the longest I've owned one particular car, and 87k is the highest mileage I've had on a daily driver and I fear once it hits that 100k mile mark any potential trade-in value is going to plummet? The little devil on my shoulder is starting to poke at me... spend/finance that little bit more than I'm comfortable with (or go PCP finance) and have a nice shiny, few month old race blue VRS 2.

I guess I'm hoping to be talked out of it, but suspect it'll go the opposite way! Anyone miss their Mk1 / regret changing?!

I should probably add that I do run a Mk1 MX5 for fun, so the diesel daily and that is an almost perfect practical/fun combination.Less so with the more costly to run Mk2, although I was shocked that the new VRS is significantly LESS to insure??

Had a mk1 but the mk2 is lightyears ahead imho (aside from fuel consumption). Do it!

Liked my MKI but no regrets. MKII is a nicer place to sit - DSG won't be for everyone but I love it.

Do miss riding the torque through the 6-speed box occasionally though.

Nope, no regrets moving on. As much as I loved my Black Mark 1 vRS and

its raw lowdown/midrange performance I much prefer what I have now.

It's fair to say I'm having lots of fun with the new car :)

I don't regret not buying a brand new Mark 2 either.

It was something I was also considering earlier on in the year.

In the end, the dsg only thing was what put me off.

If there had been a manual I might have given it a go.

Whilst I'm sure dsg is a superb system, it's just not for me.

I still miss mine. Changed it for the wrong reasons and bitterly regretted it.

However, when I test drove a Mk2 vRS, it was so far ahead of the Mk1 it was not even funny. If I could afford one I would be driving one now :)

Grr666, the other option I thought of was going to the next notch up in performance either now, with a Mk1 Mazda 3 MPS (strangely love the stealth looks) or something newer in a few years time.

And Mike, yeah I wouldn't swap it to go down in performance just to have something newer.

Aren't the MPS's £400 odd a year on tax alone?

My S3 is £250 a year at current rate.

I was expecting it to be more tbh.

Yes, pricey running costs is the downside.

no regrests. the mark II is light years ahead, and I still get 50 + mpg on the way to work, its the same to tax, and cheaper to insure... and after living with DSG I'm never going back to a manual again ;)

Don't miss it at all. I sort of miss the diesel shove but it's a lot slower than the Mk2. My new vRS still surprises me how quickly I can cover ground when I want to. Point to point it's the quickest car I've had. Won't mention times over distances but let's just say it's a lot quicker than should be possible given normal traffic conditions ;) My Mk1 was nose heavy and towards the end didn't handle like I wanted to and I'd found it's limits so was time for a change. I love my Mk2, my only regret being is not scratching my RWD itch yet. Still plenty of time for that though.

this is true... I'm a lunatic, and even I cant keep up with him ;) :p

we still have our mk1 the missus has it.

They are very different cars and like lots of people had already said the mk2 is light years ahead,

We still love our mk1 and its still putting on the miles with no problems at all. I dont think its had anything go wrong at all only things we pay for are services and tyres. But after driving the mk2 the mk1 now feels slow and the power delivery in my opinion is very poor (all or nothing). Saying that if it got wrote off i wouldnt have to think twice about getting another :)

Really enjoyed ownership of the MK1 vRS.

The push of the torque was always welcomed but the MK2 behaves and drives differently so the only thing I miss is the factory-fit xenon headlamps.

I never had a mark 1 but I think it's a much better-looking car, our mark 2 is a real mishmash of styles (BMW, Mini plus lots of others!) I hope the mark 3 will be more "integral" (running for cover now!) :whew:

mark iii apparently is a little lower looking, with a rapid style front end....

good man, hot hatches should be petrol.

I don't see how you could miss the Mk1. I test drove a nearly new about 4 years ago as i was thinking of downsizing from a octavia MK1 VRS. It was slow in standard form and very basic. When i test drove the Mk2 ... Well now we are getting somewhere... I was instantly hooked.. Now where did i put that litre of oil?

Genuinely not willy waving here Martyn, but you never made it past my Stage 1 Mark 1 at Combe in April

as your own video shows ;) :p Admittedly you closed in on the corners though.

Picked it up today, very happy so far - I'll stick a full review and pics up soon.

I just miss the reliability... But having said that the mk2 is light years ahead in every other area...
