Hi I have a skoda octy 1 1.8t non vrs and in wet weather on a hill today the wheels spun and the whole car shook.

Now I have a a roaring noise when turning and from 20mph up in a straight line. I wanted to know what people thought it was, and possible fixing costs.

I think its CV's and that isnt what I wanted to hear. but I have no choice, How long could I drive for with them roaring?

cheers

  • im currently trying to install my etka/elsawin package so may find an answer in a minute

the cv joints can be picked up for £10-£20 each and if you buy a spline tool kit £7 you can do it yourself. undo wheel end 34mm nut ithink, and 6x m8 spline bolts at other end, once inner end is undone itll drop down, and then slid along away from the wheel, and bang done.

Add some fresh cv grease on install of new ones and your good.

Thats if the noise is cv's which is normally a clicking sound

Hey, great advice thanks,

If there is no clicking noise what do you think it could be, its more of a roaring noise as i turn and drive, bit like humming low frequency wind noise?

check visually, sounds like some plastic or the undertray is fouling the tyre. the judder could have dislodged something, sometimes cars judder when wheelspinning and quite violently. have look with a torch, maybe jack her up and pull each panel see if its loose

other than that - DEFINITELY wheel bearing

CVs click. When turning first and in a straight line when they are properly funked.

Are you sure its not something cought in the wheel or driveshaft? Arch liner dislodged maybe?

I will check this in morning Im hoping its these latter ideas and ill let you know, this is great advice thanks guys,

your welcome, let us know if you need more advice

pancake pipe might have popped off which could generate the roaring noise?

hi cheers, whats the pancake pipe?

Its a turbo boost pipe that runs down drivers side inner wheel arch, but if it had popped you would know as performance would drop right off and she wouldn't like it.

Hi Everyone,

Jacked the car up and i deduct the following:

- Its not the pancake pipe

- its not plastic on the wheels

- the wheels felt a bit wobble and a have slight grease leakage from the left boot on cv

I popped to garage and they are looking tomorrow morning. I also pumped up my tyres and checked all engine fluids and power steering and thats all find. I am a bit stumped. I tightened up the wheel nuts and cant feel anything really clicking or jolting through the steering wheel whilst driving turning full lock to lock so a bit confused.

I also heard a bit of a clicking sound coming from a black box on the drivers side of the engine bay next to the washer fluid. bit confused by that too

any light upon this would be great?

mega stumpped!!

cheers

My car is making a noise similar to this fellow members discription except it does it the whole time.

'i have a strange noise on my octy vrs, when going along in gear at about 20 mph i can hear a very faint sound like a brake disc rubbing, then when i am going round a bend you can hear it even more like a brake disc rubbing sound, the sound is only comes when i put my foot on the throttle at a certain speed say 20 mph, if i take my foot of the pedel it goes.does not make a sound when rolling in gear only when i put my foot on the throttle does it make the sound.i cant find where its coming from any help please guys'

everyone in his comments says wheel bearings and cv's but would wheel bearings go together at the same time? same for CV's?

The clicking in the engine bay will be the evap canister and its normal so don't worry about that. Cant help with the rest I'm afraid though matey.

cheers about the clicking

If when you jack it up the wheel wobbles or can be moved by holding wheel top and bottom and wiggling you have a bad bearing. The noise indicates this too, louder when turning one side. also sounds like the cv boot is gone, is there grease eveywhere? Blacks stuff? Those are the culprits.

Well the one on passenger side, boot connecting to the engine looks a bit leaky a little, couldnt get hte car high enough to see boot on the wheel. I guess its that then, cheers guys better start saving !!

about £150 to get bearing done, cv boot while in doing bearing maybe budget total £200. if there is wobbly play the bearing has become dangerous so be careful

Hi everyone,

Right, I had a wheel bearing fixed, on drivers side, wasnt waht I thought it was. Then drove it this morning and the diff on nearside has reuptured the gearbox casing and inner cv has decombusted. I am down in the dumps short on cash and any advice right now would be a great help.

First step cup of tea and five minutes away from the car next step ring around a few scrapyards or look on eBay for a gearbox and driveshaft.

how old is your clutch/ dmf ?

Sorry to hear your misfortune dude it happens to all of us :(

HI guys,

had some time away from the car and a think and also got it up on a ramp now. The gearbox has effectively exploded. the casing has 9 holes in it, the diff shattered but luckily nothing has effected the engine I dont think.

My clutch is about three years i believe, only bought the car in june, but ill go through the service history to find out. I am just looking for a replacement gearbox now with diff included. So if you know anyone with a good condition one that would be great

cheers everyone

worse case replacement box at the mo http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SKODA-OCTAVIA-VRS-MANUAL-GEARBOX-CODE-EHA-2000-2006-/230882596809?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Cars+Type%3ARS+1.8+T&hash=item35c1acd7c9, tho that is a bit expensive imo, maybe make an offer, plus its not a billion miles from you, so you could perhaps collect.Really they should go for around 150 max imo, thats what i sold my last one for, ask billy on here, think he had one for sale, could be wrong though!
