Stick a relay in line, and find a ign feed and trigger the relay so when the engine is running the power goes to

the amp, but when you switch off the power is killed to the amp

my sub has a built in amp does this change anything

Sounds like you have it wired wrong,

There should in addition to the supply from the battery, be another connection from the headunit which is usually labeled as remote, amp remote or simillar. The remote cable operates a relay built in to the sub and it will cut the power when the headunit is switched off.

Pin-6 (yellow section) of the T20 connector is the output for an external amp. This usually goes to an input on the amp/sub or a relay in cases where there isn't such an input. Don't use an ignition feed or you will find that you can turn the radio on but the amp/sub will have no power.
