can you fit wider, lower profile tyres on standard vRS gigaros?

Featured Replies

I'm sure I've read somewhere on here that its possible to fit 215/35 17's on the standard Gigaro rims in place of the OEM 205/40's; the additional 10mm width being offset by the reduction in profile and allowing the fit or something like. Just curious if its true?

It is indeed dude. Can get 215s on 7j rims

A profile only for looks?

215/35 is a rare tyre.

you need 215/40R17 tyres. loads available, and an easy fit with practically identical rolling diameter

Thanks guys, just wondering why Skoda don't fit 215's like Seat and VW do to Cupra and GTi, a cost saving measure perhaps?

Indeed, plus they wouldnt want the Skoda keeping up ;)

Are the Ibiza and Polo wheels also 7J then? Keen to know if this a worthwhile thing to do. "If" I end up having to put 4 new tyres on the thing I'd consider it given the cost difference is likely negligible as long as its a safe thing to do and the dealers wouldn't frown on it.

How funny, just Googled it and answered my own question. Alloys on a GTi are also 7J, must literally be a cost saving measure and a way to impede the vRS's dynamics, not that an additional 2cm of rubber ought make huge sums of difference, still bad though when the Fabia is still a 16.5/17k car

Coule of questions....maybe daft though. Would the size change consitiute an MOT failure? Also would the tyre pressures be different from the 205's and how would you work them out?

The size change does not constitute a MOT failure if you have the the required amount of tread & the correct Speed/Load rating,

not that many MOT testers are checking that very closely yet.

The A1 195 bhp (192 bhp) & the Polo GTi Twin Charger are on 215/40/17 as standard

& the Lesser Engine A1 Competition Line gets put out on 225/35/18's

I run the same pressures on 205's as i do on 215's set to suit the Load being carried & the TPMS re-set.

I'll defo be going 215/40 17 at the next change.

So its fair to say then guys 215's of the same speed (W or above) and load index or better (is it 87?) At same factory recommended pressures as the 205's is perfect?

Think if all my tyres needed changing I'd consider the 215 40 Conti Sport Contact 3's and make the most of the rim size. The conti 2's on the car have been v good for both grip and wear

Yep, 215's can go straight on with no issues. My rears didn't need doing this time but I'd imagine when the next change is due all 4 will need replacement so will be a good time to make the upgrade!

Tyres ned to be wirthin 2.5% of the standard OEM rolling circumference.

Tyre Size Diameter Circumference Difference Speedo Fits Wheel Rim

---------- -------- ------------- ---------- ------ --------------

205/40 R17 596 mm 1872 mm 0.00 % 70.00 7x17 to 8.5x17

215/40 R17 604 mm 1898 mm 1.39 % 70.97 7x17 to 8.5x17

Just out of interest if I changed my fronts to this size can I keep the rears standard? My fronts will be due a change soon but my rears are fine atm.

I think it depends how sensitive the ESP sensors are. You might get an ABS/ESP error due to the fact that the fronts and rears will be rotating at different speeds. Or it'll confuse the hell out of the ESP and it won't work properly.

I would change all 4 or not at all TBH.

Swap them front to back ;) not forgetting to balance them as I know 90% of garages don't bother balancing wheels fitted to the rear of cars.

Really? You would certainly notice if your rear wheels weren't balanced :D

Would 225/40's fit ok on 7j's and also fit OK on a vRS with no scrub? My old Golf had 7j and had 225/45 rubber

I would not go that far tbh, greater than the recommended 2.5% difference, handling probably worse as well .

Wouldn't putting 215s on invalidate your insurance if you didnt tell them?

215 is biggest for 7j need 7.5j for 225. Grip is immense with 225 over the 205 especially when pulling away.

7J will take a 225 wide tyre - I did this on my old vRS Octavia.

225/35/zr17 would be the ones to get if they don't rub on the arches....

Steve.
