OEM Pipe work! <coughs tea out> HOW MUCH?

Featured Replies

Seriously...

How is the little bend at the bottom of the intercooler £106???

Will give TPS a call tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath..

And as far as I can tell online, actually attaching anything non OEM to the SMIC is tricky and OEM pipework's the best way to go..

I've already gotta sort a windscreen... And have just had a 40k Belt service... And the turbo's wheezing away (though, hopefully a new pipe will go some way to shutting that up).

... Sigh ...

Are there any other places I should call that are like TPS?

Or any magical bodges I don't know of? Sam mentioned self tappers, good idea,.. but I'd rather try and avoid screwing into the intercooler until I'm desperate..

Cable ties seems to be a common one. super glue maybe? Hah

To be fair self tappers do work...

And for that kind of cost i'd be willing to entertain the idea.

£106 wow! You can get a tx autsport front mount (including pipework) for about £100 more

Just whack some self tappers in there and get it sorted forever :)

I just don't get how it can be so much? Even taking into consideration it's "High specification"..

Self tappers becoming more appealing.. It's not popped yet... but it is gonna go, looks very much on it's limit of purchase..

I recently changed the bottom boost hose on a vw passat... its easy double the size of that and cost £76 from tps deliverd to my place of work.

Strange how that piece is more expencive. I'd imagine its just a case of the dealers clocking onto whats sold and bumping the price up each time, same as the pd 160 intake... people have said it used to cost £30 for both parts, its around three times that now.

hopefully tps will be cheaper but i cant see it tbh, self tapper screw might be the way farward. Good luck.

The issues I have with self tappers is... Surely they start to leak around their self tapped holes as they wear, and they can't ever be a tight fit?.. and also.. 3, or 4 little metal pins holding it on, is it really strong enough?... And what if one of the screws snaps and gets a guided tour of the turbo and a cylinder? I dunno.. Sam has had success with it, I don't doubt that.. but something about it just seems a bodge to far.. I'll prob end up buying the OEM pipe... I normally do.. Friggin' car.. it best not drop it's turbo before 100k.

Me Pops reckons I should look for a used one from a low mile breaker.. but that seems like a false economy, and probably not that easy anymore..

Having seen the lugs of a new one on google, I can now see why the garage advised me it's gonna need changing ASAP.. More like bumps then clips on my pipe...

The self tappers can be sealed with araldite. They certainly don't leak then!

I can vouch for that :)

In all honestly i wouldn't want to self tapper mine either.... if its only the one pipe i'd just bite the bullet and pay for new one, but... only if the pipe has popped off, not just a warning it isnt the best fit because none of them are anyway.

What part do you self tapper into? the metal bit the clip pushes over? What happens to the metal that comes off the self tapper and pipework? sucked into the engine?

Glue them in place... What happens when you want to remove them?! araldite isnt the easier stuff to remove and might end up damaging the pipe even more.

You drill the holes through the metal. You remove all the pipework that you are drilling, and make sure the pipe is clean of any swarf before putting them back together.

The araldite just makes an air tight seal. It doesn't make it impossible to unscrew again.

Thats absolutly crazy! I replaced the top intercooler pipe for £33 from tps. How can a smaller pipe be that much more!?

Mate im pritty sure i have this pipe in my box i shall double check in mornin pipe is in good condition removed due to me fitting fmic for hybrid turbo pm me if need be

Because it commonly fails and skoda like to ramp the price up of commonly failing/upgrade parts to milk as much money as possible

I did that pipe and the one immediately below it with 3 screws on each..

They've been in place for months and are still solid as a rock....

Yup... I was there when this was done. Worked a treat :)

It is not strange. Put a VRS badge on it and the double the price of everything. I for one am ****ed off with this as they all jump on the bandwagon and charge us over the odds for parts because of a badge. I think some kind of watchdog should get involved as i have seen many parts for the VRS that are frankly a silly price for what they are. £100 for that is a joke and nearly as bad as the price of a pd160 intake. Im really starting to think its because its a German car, and we are British. Are VW really gonna do us any favours ?. Once again rip off Britain never ceases to annoy me.

As for them knowingly bumping up the price of parts likley to fail, we will only be stung once. I wll not buy another VW branded car because of practices like this. And scince when did Skoda UK think its Mercedes Benz as my local Skoda dealer charges the same per hour as them.

Is this the start of WW3 then? ^^

Well that would generate some jobs lol. But seriously the amount of parts they have bumped the price on is crazy. I would love to see a comparision chart of the prices when the car came out and now. It's like Skoda changed the manufacturing process to include gold plateing at some point. Surely there is a law to stop them charging what they like for parts that are cheap to manufacture, is there anything we can do?. The attitude of just bite the bullet and buy it is half the reason they think they can get away with it. Yes my trousers feel big today ;p.

It's a question of supply and demand though.

They were probably cheap when they were still making the PD130 engine, as they needed them at the factory for new cars, so parts would be produced in much bigger numbers.

Now they're only produced (if still at all) and stocked for spare parts, so will be in far lower numbers bumping the price up.

Thats a good answer but as the demand for things drop they usaully get cheaper. We need to make it our mission to find or modify parts from other VW cars to fit without paying the silly VRS badge tax that owning this particular variant of the PD130 platform seems to warrant. I dispise monopolies, even more so in the current economic climate.
