dragon tuning box experience..

Featured Replies

Hi guys..had a drago pd130 tuning box on my mk1 vrs recently its now been taken off as it was causing clutch slip..

Ive taken it off and the clutch is fine no slip in any gear.

Anyone had this before and what settings did you use? Cheers :)

Tuning box causing clutch slip?? That's strange how a tuning mod can cause slip I always assumed its because of a worn cluth/plate very weird that

I think its more for performance. So having the box might give out 160bhp putting more

Power through the clutch than the standard 130bhp.

Either way it means its going to need changing quite soon!

It's the effect of throwing fuel at your stock system upping the power at RPMs that your clutch really won't like the high power/torque at.

Not to mention with higher power, comes the urge to drive it harder... And if you're not sympathetic to your clutch then expect it to slip.

I had one of those tdi tuning boxes but I took it off, it was frying the clutch under hard acceleration! Totally transformed the car lol but the clutch + flywheel were new back in May so I didn't really fancy having to fork out for another lot.

Tuning boxes like the one named cause turbo spikes, hence your clutch slip, either spend good money on a "good" tuning box such as steinbauer or pay the same money for a remap!

It's not the box causing clutch destruction, its the driver. If you know it can cause slip, back off the throttle, just cos the power is there doesnt mean you need to use all of it all the time.

Like I said.

If I booted any car enough, eventually it'd break. Even at stock.

Couple that in with you pushing the envelope of the manufacturers spec... You're going to hit that breakage point faster.

Either drive it sympathetically, get an upgraded clutch, or get a tune that prevents you burning out your clutch by restricting power at lower rpms and smoothing out your torque curve (yes, they do exist).

I ran a dragon tuning box for over a year with no issue whatsoever. Sold it & now shark powered =)

As already stated, it won't be the box that's making the clutch slip - it's what you are doing with a combination of your right & left foot.

Well..i was holding back on the revs until about 2200-2500 and i would ease the power in and i was still getting slip. Im sure its to do with the spike of the torque

Drive it right and it wont batter your turbo/clutch, be gentle with your power delivery. I bought my VRS with one fitted and I was very impressed with it. Yes it had a spike but ran it for 4 years with no slip and im still on my original clutch. I replaced it with a REVO 170bhp map which was smoother but very similar power feeling.

Multiple drag starts at the lights will batter any clutch on any car.

I had a dragon digital box on mine set on highest setting for 12 month with no problems

A tuning box will kill your clutch due to torque spikes mentioned above. It will also in time kill the fuel pump and possibly injectors as the fuel pressure is increased. If it is smokey which most tuning boxes are it will likely bugger someting else up too. They do make great power and make the car fly but at the expence of wearing out expencive components. Take it off and get a proper map.

Exactly think of it this way.

When you look into it...

Picture a simple control system, the ECU needs inputs and outputs (internal and external) as far as sensors and internal lookup values, it refers to tables that are hardcoded in, your box how clever it may be will 'never' be as good overall as a remap - unless you can somehow tap into every linked value through a harness.

You alter calibration tables and values that link it with other tables, getting power is done by fueling, timing and boost simply. A tuning box can alter the fueling since this is how you extract most power, however you are telling the car one thing whilst its expecting to do another, it is looking up references in other tables hence spikes and smoky delivery. Its sort of adding ontop of existing values and in a 'grey' area, it isn't as bad as it seems though.

This is the easiest i can explain it.

Boxes work to an extent but are not the most elegant, efficient nor safest way to extract power. They are a dirty way if you think about how they extract power and economy.

Would be nice to put something like this on a sticky since its asked just about every fortnight.
