Engine Revving when changing gears.

Featured Replies

Hello All,

First time owner in need of help. My 2005 Skoda Fabia Classic 1.2 (100k miles) has started revving when i change gears. Initially I thought it could be one of two things - clutch slipping or accelerator cable. So rather than mess about, I took it straight into a 'reputable' garage and asked them to check having told them the symptoms.

They said it was definitely the clutch and it needed a new one. I gave the go ahead and they put a new clutch kit in - I picked it up as they were closing this afternoon and when I managed to get it on a road where I could get out of 2nd, it started doing the same thing again - I have tried making sure the accelerator comes off fully before the clutch goes in so it definitely isn't my driving resting on the accelerator but when the clutch goes in, engine revs go up and then as I change - the revs go up again and it lags and shudders before it goes again - it sounds pretty awful if I'm going at a fair crack down a road and change up. I also Rev'd in neutral - just a little tap and the meter went right up to the red which its never done before if i was double d clutching for hills etc. I'm going to have to take it back to the garage and I'll ask them to check the cable but it doesn't seem like its sticking - Im not a mechanic so thought I would ask if anyone has had any similar issue.

No recent changes to the car

I was driving on wet muddy roads the day it started

Have changed fuel from Esso to Shell

I cant think of any other changes and it may not mean anything but thought it may be of use.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Rob.

How quickly did the revs drop, and did you prod it enough to go up that far? It DOES sound like something is sticking - possibly mud has got into the throttle housing in the engine bay, or water is affecting the EMU.

Just hazarding a guess, never owned a Fabia, but had issues with a Renault where the throttle return spring got jammed.

Mine did this ended up replacing abs sensors and a reluctor ring on the wheel bearing and it stopped get someone with vcds to scan it for you

Plenty of guesses... I'd say egr valve or throttle body.

Get it scanned, see if anything comes up.

Also, im pretty sure is "drive by wire" rather than a throttle cable, meaning when you press the pedal its only sending a signal to the car telling it how much the pedals pushed down, not actually pulling a cable.

2 cheap things to check 1st...

any splits in pipes?

Check the vacuum pipe from the brake servo to the throttle body.. very common for these to split at the joins.. about £15 to buy from skoda/vw/ seat..

As u look at the engine the servo is at the left at the back and its a black solid plastic pipe about 1m thick that goes along the bulkhead (back of engine)

Remove the throttle body + give it a good clean with carb cleaner or brake cleaner...

  • 6 years later...

Hi Rob. I realize this is now 6,5 years later. But I'm having the same problem. Did you ever manage to find a solution? Best, Johannes
