Drilling/screwing into the side of the center console

Featured Replies

It was hard to come up with a proper thread title for this since most people probably never have done this, but I'm going to install the mount for the electric interior heater into my car. They are typically screwed to the side of the center console on the passenger side, which of course would be the drivers side on a right hand drive car.

I could always take a look myself what's behind there, but I'd rather not take my dash apart if I can avoid it. Anyone know if it's safe to put a couple of self-tapping screws in there?

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, here's a picture. Modern heaters are obviously less bulky than the fairly old one on the picture, but you get the idea. :)

I've had the ashtray out its mostly hollow there's a guide with pics how to take it out on here somewhere pretty straight forward takes about 5 minutes then you can watch where your screws are going

The panel's quite thick and robust IIRC and can easily accommodate screws that aren't too long. I drilled through mine to create holes to make it easier to get the screws in and had no problems.

If in doubt I think the panel's just held by one screw at the front end and Velcro round the edges.

Sarge.

Why not try some exterior trim double sided sticky foam stuff if it falls off then look as screwing it in. The type of stuff that holds on door guards badges, number plates etc...

I don't think there's a double sided tape out there strong enough for this. :) I'll do it properly with screws right away, even if it'll hurt to drill holes into a car with 1026km on it.

I don't have an ashtray though, I presume you are talking about what in my case is a little storage bin in front of the gear selector?

In case anyone cares, this is the one I'm installing: http://www.defa.com/en/marine/warmup/products/engine_heaters/interior_heaters/termini_1350_153/

Yes I think there's 3 screws at the front of it and you lift the gear stick gator up then the ashtray/storage bin comes out at an angle.

If you want an alternative to screws tiger seal is mighty sticky stuff!

There are a couple of screw holes for a piece of plastic there already that you might be able to use.

Otherwise industrial Velcro hook side onto the carpet is prett strong.

But why???

My friend has a taxi and he has the company radio screwed to the side of the console on the passenger side. Hasn't had any other electrical problems after fitting.

I've got my CB screwed into there, and also a cigarette lighter socket extension.

Been there for over 2yr now, never had any issues.

I used 4 self tappers, it honestly never even occurred to me to check what was behind it lol

Never underestimate the strength of double sided sticky its mega strong. For example I have a GoPro HD Hero2 mounted on side of my helmet its a boxy object that causes a lot of drag but its only held onto its mount by a double sided sticky the size of a postage stamp imagine the amount of weight on it at that speed to point beyond what I could control with my own strength. I was really impressed The size and weight of heater in link would not be a problem I was more thinking heat but that might not be a problem. I still think its worth a try to take that sticky stuff off its a pain as its so strong but you can and can clean it up like new.

mounted in same place as this:

Does 160mph and solid on there still only stops there as the drag from air flow was at my necks limit was starting to really pull my head around: Play in 1080p

I was expecting someone to ask this. :)

Everyone has electric heaters fitted to their cars here. A heater element on the engine, in this case on the oil pan, and a space heater inside for defrosting the cabin. We plug our cars in every night, and the timer turns on every morning.

Or if you want it out of the way, why not put under the passenger seat, then feed the power cable up the side of the centre console,

Ian

What a way to be on, its a few huskies and a sleigh that you need not an octavia :D
