I have a Netgear WNR 3500L hooked up to the SuperHub (in modem mode). Gigabit speed but a little redundant in my case as the home LAN is connected through separate gigabit switches. Main reason for the Netgear was to run Tomato firmware - a lot more control over traffic and routing than the stock stuff.

I'm on the 50Mb tier and theoretically Virgin are doing the speed doubling here this month, so the 100Mb (or 120Mb if it ever arrives) might test it a little.

I've also got a semi-dead Linksys WRT54GL & power supply kicking around somewhere - could post on the supply if it helps.

I'm 100 now, I'll let you know on the psu I'm sure I've got another somewhere as I've had two of these routers, although I'm not sure where the first ended up, seems to be fine on the other psu cheers for the offer :-)

Go for a better quality one with 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz much less crowded @5Ghz very rarely drops out

gone through a few of cheaper ones

Yeah I'm well aware of belkin, I've removed more of them from peoples houses than any other brand.

Well I'm up and running on old faithful ........No fires either

Belkin dear god no, also that one is for a DSL line not a Cable modem line

Yep sorry cable modem needed, but speak as i find this belkin is a lot more stable than any other I've had, months go bye without problems , the previous Netgear Dg834 crashed almost everyday and wifi would not work

mind you I did have an older belkin about 3 years ago and that was pants

also 0800 belkin customer care not premium rate

given that so much if the UK network is built with Huawei that might be difficult to achieve! Remember BT dumped Marconi for Huawei and tipped Marconi into oblivion.

Normal telephony isn't secure anyway because of the way it's routed.

I know

Another vote for TPLink, I havent bought another make since my first TP.

A word of warning though, are you sure your problem is not outside interference?? EVERYONE around here is suffering dropped connections due to outside interference, it is wide spectrum and when whatever it happens, it is so bad my network cannot even detect my wifi printer - which is currently less than 12" away from it!!!

At least my TP lets me go up to channel 13, which is the clearest option available; TPLink also use detachable antenna, so you can slap on a set of +9db jobs if needed.

Nah got the old skool Linksys WRT54GS running the DD WRT fw and it's rock solid now, with a far better signal in the living room, which is all of 8ft from the router in the hall lol, "Super Hub" eh ... who'd have it !!

Just need something as good as this but with N and Gigabit wired ports now.

I'll throw up some TP model links when I get round to having a good look, this will do for now though, it's shut The Furher up for now anyway !!

Well i think the DD-WRT firmware will support N (300mbps) you then need to get a compatible router from the 'tested' list. Its a while since i had a play with the firmware once i set it up its been rock solid. But i remember being suitably impressed with the results. Im on 60mb band with Virgin and on a speed test i get 62mb + dl and 10mb+ upload. Very impressed with virgin speeds although i have been with them since Diamond Cable back in the day. Although hope you never get a problem and have to use customer tech support in Delhi. Unless its on their script notes your screwd even a simple conversation can become problematic and they always seem to have a screaming baby in the background. One day i phoned them up and there was a massive cheer in the background like it was a stadium fair play the bloke asked if he could ring me back as they were all watching the cricket india against pakestan. He did aswell put the phone down on me and rang me back about an hour later by this time id fixed the problem myself.

Just ordered one of these, will get £20 off due to me being on the partner programme, might get another unmanaged switch for my man cave, got a TP Link one which feeds the TV stand in the living room via homeplugs, at the moment the router sits on the hall floor by my man cave door due to the wall being about 14" thick as it was the garage at one point, a switch would allow me one ethernet cqable and the power cable and make it look a bit neater, as I could have the cable mess in here then.

Virgin support are ok, you just have to ring a few time until you get through to Cardiff, that said I've only had to ring them about 3 times in 9 yrs,

The default answer is Draytek... (or Billion get good reviews)

However be careful... these days our superfast connections are way beyond the speed ratings of 3rd party routers.. so definately worth researching.

That said i think they always quote worst case - my Draytek 2820 has mention of 50meg - however im getting line speed on 80meg. ive since found out that its usually related to running QoS which i dont need.

That's interesting as I did read that the 2820 was maxed out at 40meg on WAN2, we currently have an ongoing project of 26 sandwich shops to be connected back to a head office for a VPN. Draytek 2955 at the head office on a 10meg leased line Draytek 2830n on Broadbands.

Done 7 shops so far and had 2 faulty 2830n, one just constantly rebooted and the other couldn't hold a stable connection. Bit worrying as the old blue Draytek routers and the 2820 seemed rock solid.

Couldn't afford a Draytek lol

I don't mind spending but ....

Picked the one shown above, I'll let you know how it goes

Around 70Mbits on a 2820n with no issues.

2850 is interesting but the 2830 offers little IMHO.

TBH i dont get particularly good wireless performance, but its more than likely congestion as living in flats and now every bugger has Wifi-N these days - and these modern homehubs/superhubs that automatically swap channels mean i can never get clear air.

N. 5ghz does seem a poorer connection, and I see 5ghz doesn't get through the walls so good, on a brighter note that router I bought has done the trick, signal better all round ping is lower15 ms down from 21 and jitter down to 1ms from 4ms.

Col, did you sort PB??
