Coolant

Featured Replies

Hi,

I topped up my coolant today - used g40 as I'm told that's the right stuff, super ceded g12, pink stuff

Anyway, I got a bit 'tip happy' and have gone a couple of mm over the max. Do I need to worry?

i did the same too

Im not too worried, i think there is an overflow

Dont worryabout overfilling there is an overflow but u shud be using the "pink stuff"... g12 was superceded by g12+ but its now g12+++ iirc... def pink tho dont use that blue sh!te that back streets use it only lasts 2 years + when mixed with pink will go a nice purple lol :D

Mixing coolant types isn't a good idea, it usually ends in sludge forming.

Not wanting to argue or saying it doesnt happen, just wanting to learn... But have you actually seen this?

How long should it take to happen?

I ask as i've got a bucket at work that all the old anti-freeze gets put in, gets used year round and not much has happend to that in the form of brown sludge etc... I did notice when mixing some pink and some red, they seperate in the bucket and dont mix, like water droplets on oil kind of thing...

Looking at the specs g40 is the same as g12++... Apparently. It was definitely pink.

Skoda book says don't mix types of coolants between the Pink G12 and the Blue.

Blue can be mixed with any Blue, but Pink G12 strictly only to Pink G12.

Degrades Pink G12 coolant when Blue coolant added to it.

Can't quote about G12+'s, I just get the local independent garage to check density/ strength each winter.

Pink G12 has added water to get the correct strength/density.

Garage aims for mid-level of high & low mark as when engine hot, the level should be at the high mark.

When engine hot and level is below the high mark, wait until engine cold again then top-up with either water or G12 just by that difference in the level.

So next time engine is again hot, the level is now at the high mark.

It's G13 now from Skoda, isn't it? That's what I came away with a few weeks back anyway.Presume it's backwards compatible with what the car had in it from the factory; wasn't warned to the contrary at the dealership. Can't say I've read the info on the bottle though, yet.

Dunno what G40 is, but I don't think VAG sell it?

G40 is compatible, cost 25 quid from halfords... It's pink too, and says VW, Audi, skoda and seat on the bottle...

If you're really worried get some strong kitchen towel and roll it into a thick tube thing and dip it in the tank to soak up some excess coolant

of course don't soak it so much it drops into the tank!!!

Just got a bottle of coolant out of parts for my job + its now G13!! I cant keep up lol :D

As above, it's now g13, and says in the label it's compatible with g12 and plus plus

Been g13 for a bit with vw matt.

Keep up!

There is no overflow. The tube on the outside is for coolant blown through the cap.

If you look inside the reservoir you will see the coolant return pipe discharges into a cup with electrodes in it. If the water pump fails, the cup will become empty and trigger the low coolant alarm. If you overfill it so that the cup is always full, you will get no warning if the water pump fails.

There is an overflow on the opposite side to to the return pipe its a small rectangular hole iirc. Its just there to vent off when there is excess pressure, otherwise something far worse could happen under that amount of pressure.

Isnt that the plug for the coolant level sensor.

No thats next to the return pipe. ;)

It's a pressurised system - there is no overflow. The only way any coolant can escape is through the pressure cap. Merely overfilling it will not cause this to happen.

My car everytime I refill the bottle it cracks the bottle but everytime I bleed the system I can't seem to get warm air through my heater matrix, it also drinks like a ****head in a pub, but there's no sign of a leak
