Can i cover my battery? Is it safe?

Featured Replies

This may seem like a very stupid question to alot of people on here but i thought i'd best check just in case....

I've got a battery cover...

I know it looks naff in the pictures but i think it will look quite good once fitted, its going on the BLT engine bay so as some of you may know from the recent thread, they dont come with a battery cover. Now i went to fit it but then when i noticed the fuse board ontop of the battery as well as a few other things i thought maybe it doesnt have a cover on for a reason....

I'll post before and after pictures of course :)

Thanks.

Where did you find that beauty?

Well i went to the scrap yard today to get a few bits and bobs, a different interior light, a third middle sun vistor etc... and seen this on a 2007 vauxhall zafira, managed to get two incase one needed cutting etc but went to fitit today and it fits perfect over the battery and clips over the fuzes no problem, Really wish i took pictures now because it does look a million times better but that picture i posted before makes it look abit rubbish :\

the ASZ engines have a cover like that but only round the sides

Mine has the cover around the size also, but some have the full plastic cover all the way round and ontop

Like this one....

Mine looks pretty much like this one, just without the cover under the fuses etc.. most people will know what i mean. This is pretty much what facelift / BLT engine's came with.

Yeah same, BLT engine only got covers round the sides. Does this really help in anyway?

I got it purley for how it looks in the engine bay. I guess other benefits are keeping the frost off the battery abit better...

If the asz engine has it then I dont see why it`d cause a issue on a blt

The asz has a whole plastic battery cover with an additional cover at the top to cover the inline fuse board that are ontop of the battery.

This is a material type cover that will be directly touching these inline fuses, live and earth terminals and anything els on or around the battery.

A third middle sun visor?

Can you elaborate on this please.

it's a small sun visor the goes above the rear view mirror. actually quite nice to have

Oh wow. I'd love one of those lol.

Possible to do on a fabia?

Dont think so, my roof lining is pre-cut for one it just isnt fitted. The fabia has one half built into each sunvisor i.e the left half is on the left sunvisor and the other half is built into the drivers side sun visor.

got a middle sun visor on mine.

I thought middle visor was a sunroof model thing. Seems useless though IMO as big gap.

Different sized battery's mate!

So why would a different size battery mean you can't cover it?

I think he's refuring to the cover not fitting the size battery rather than it being safe to cover it. Still havnt had a straight answer anyway...

Im just thinking they left the cover off for a reason and worried incase one of the inline fuses ontop of the battery break up and end up setting the cover on fire or somthing similar.

Interesting idea. I've often wondered why they redesigned this area leaving exposed electricals vulnerable to water dripping off the corner of the bonnet. I can't imagine it would be in case it got too hot though - a fuse usually blows pretty instantly.

Cost I`d say.

Well tomorrows one of my days off so i'll dedicate it to doing all the other bits and bobs i've been meaning to do....

I'll make sure fitting this goes on the list. I think or my own piece of mind i'll try and make a plastic cover for the fuses then fit this battery cover over that.

It touches the battery terminals on the vauxhalls anyway, so it is designed to cover a battery... Shouldnt be a problem on a different battery.

Mines not exposed as it's got small lid/caps on terminals. It's easier access to fuses and replacement of battery i guess. Suppose the newer cars are all covered in panels etc. Personally I like to see the innards of things as they look interesting/raw.
