Arrgh bone dry dipstick!

Featured Replies

Don't mean to start yet another oil thread, but...

Went to check mine today as haven't done for 3 weeks. Level surface, although oil temp was only at 70degs. Wiped dipstick, dipped into engine, out again and only the 2 orange parts were covered in oil. The measuring section was completely dry.

Tried again a few mins later and only the very bottom section had oil on, as well as the orange bits.

Thought my engine had not been too bad with oil, only using 1.25 litres in 4747 miles.

Is this just me getting an inaccurate reading or have I just joined the high oil usage club?

  • Think i will stick with my two Fabia Diesels, one a 1.9tdi and the other a 1.6tdi, the 1.9 is checked from year to year and uses zero oil, the 1.6 (up to now) seems to be the same, using no oil at all

Sounds a lot of oil to use in only 4'747. miles.

What is the total mileage of the engine ?

That's the total mileage

Ok, looks like it was due to me just not checking it frequently enough so it had dropped through 'normal' use. Took it for a drive and got up to 83degs, tested and added 0.75 litres and back to middle of the hatched area. Time to order some more oil!

Gumpy you know you need to check nearly every time you drive it, although driving these cars should be a thrill and enjoyable but seems to be more like cacking your pants until you check it ! It's a shame so bloody check it religiously or you'll need a new engine

Nah, that's nothing compared to some vRS engines

1.25L over nearly 5K miles is perfectly normal for these engines. From max to min is around 1.5L so you seem to be fine. With these figures, certainly not needed checking every time you take it out, but once in a month wouldn't harm it. All the rest is for people who just can't help repeating the same old crap.

Lesson learnt now. Cheers guys!

Reminder set to check every weekend now...and more oil ordered

I was not aware that these engine's drank so much oil, but judging by the other comments it seems normal. I am a diesel car driver with a car that has done 159'000. miles and drinks very little oil !

That's my boy ;)

As is often pointed out, and most often by me.

"These cars", do not drink so much oil.

Some may,

and many do if the oil level that is being run is lowish.

Then the oil consumption might well become a problem.

(running less oil than the 3.6 litres required does not seem to make much sense to me.)

Run the correct oil quantity to start with and if it uses a bit top it up.

This could save lots of people the problems they seem to have.

After all it is not a Diesel,

its a 'Twin Charger Petrol engine'. of quite a small capacity with quite a small oil capacity.

Not many of those around other than in VAG vehicles.

george

1.5 L in nearly 5k?? That's the sort of usage some of us can only dream of ;)

IMO you seem to have a good engine

Enjoy it

Dies it need to be up to 70 degrees to check? I normally run mine for just a few minutes so its not even at the lowest level of 50 degrees. Worried I am not warming mine up enough now!

Yes George a small capacity engine with very little oil hence the issue?, as for not many around , I agree soon be like hens teeth especially as this combo is obsolete in the not distant future, eventually the statistic will be out in regards failure, across the vag umberlla I would imagine failure rate will be high ?, I do harp on about this issue ( I do honest ) but I feel for these people with these cars, not necessarily the ones with the high oil usage but the ones that will be hammered when it comes to getting rid of them, you know the dealers are rubbing their hands because Christmas will be coming early, as for the ones with the issue of oil consumption I really feel for you all

I think you are just being a cheeky monkey on your 2012 wind up.

I think many of us will survive with our smiles per miles, and granading engines..

Long time dead, and its worth the fun while it lasts.

I am waiting to try the new Twin Charger SEAT, then maybe start a new game of Russian Roulette.

Happy New Year to all when it comes.

george

I agree we are a long time dead and if it gives you pleasure then drive what makes you happy !

Been thinking about this problem for a while and thinking that in the worst case scenario that the engine goes or it's costing as much in oil as fuel then I'll get rid of the car. But then you have the problem of what to replace it with. I bought it because bang for buck it's better than pretty much anything. Not at this stage yet though

Oh don't give us that crap now, it doesn't even sound convincing any more. As you confessed a long time ago, you just weren't allowed to have a vRS so in order to be able to live with it, for the last 2 years here you've been scaremonging people with the first chance you got, posting ironic sh** at any thread that has the "vRS" word inside, and giving crappy advice that doesn't have the slightest accuracy to anybody that doesn't know you yet, while at the same time, you've never opened even the bonnet of a vRS. People like you just keep the sh** warm. Yes it was funny in the 1st year and nobody gave real attention to what you said, but trully, AREN'T YOU DONE with it? Man you have some serious issues keep coming back to this with the same nonsense. Enjoy your mpg and peaceful sleep in your Blueline Golf as such ridiculously you've written in your avatar just to look smart: "ho, ho, doesn't use any oil, yeahhh, how's that you vRS owners?" and stop acting like you really bother giving some advice, because you don't. Sorry but this has really gone too long.

Woah, feel the rage! Lol :)

anyone for fishing???

Nop, no rage at all, I just opened the thread to read what it was about and as I scrolled down, guess what, I read another copy-paste reply from Seb's "vRS hate block" and I thought, omg (facepalm), that can't be... Doesn't he take a single day-off? Not even for holidays? I mean haven't you noticed his speed in replying to anything containing the words "vRS" and/or "oil" is astonishing? he must have enabled some keyword alert or something...

I just don't like cars or motorbikes that use lots of oil, a total PITA.

Oh oh.. It seems "Getting a life by trolling - Vol.I" doesn't work that well finally... Bloody internet blogs...

There is one good thing though in this thread. I checked the oil today after a month or so and apparently, the morrons that serviced it 2 months ago didn't know how to read the dipstick. Added some and will watch if it continues to consume around 200ml per 1000miles because what I saw today didn't make any sense.
