vrs sound proofing

Featured Replies

hi all/ i have had my car now for one week tdi vrs estate as any of you got any ideas how to reduce the noise from the back ie sound proofing tips or kits i can buy . i am finding it hard to live with anyone else noticed the noise or have i been spoiled coming from audi ownership

reducing road noise is very expensive when doing it your self.

You need to look into noise barrier products such as Silent Coat Noise iscolator and other Mass loaded vinyl products. Its very pricey as I say and a lot of work. You need to cover large areas for it to be worth while too as small bits will do nothing

If its the rear of the car you'd be looking at covering everything from the area the rear bench is located to the and including the tailgate.

I did try it on the cheap in my civic using Cloud 9 underlay. It worked but not great and as its very quick the carpet didnt fit with it down in place

Look up Dynamat. Available on Amazon.

I wouldnt. Dynamat is mainly for deadening, nothing to do with noise barriers. Its also very pricey compared to its competitors

Can you live with removing the main cause, i presume your running 18" wheels low profile tyres there noisy on all cars thats progress for you, smaller wheels bigger fatter tyres will remove most of it.Buy some steel wheels +16" winter tyres, at least it would,nt be wasting money, see other posts on this very noisy tyre subject.

aint that the truth.

My vrs has budgets on it too (i guess the tyres werent high on priorities of the previous owner) and they are really noisy

The Octavia by design generates too much noise, compared to my Mrs Astra which is like a library compared to the Octavia. Both run 18" wheels with 225/40/18's and both have ran and are running the same brands of tyre too.

i had 18" wheels on the a4 and that was silent this car came with 18" wheels shod with brand new continental sport contact 3.s and you wont believe the road noise . i have a set of vredestein ultrac sassantas virtually new i think i will swop them as said they was very quiet on the a4 . if i cant sort this i will seriously consider selling it its just not a nice place to be at the moment .

ive barely noticed the noise, its like a library compared to my 1998 Civic VTI-S lol

Lol your response made me laugh. "I wouldn't"

You wouldnt what? You wouldnt look it up? Or you wouldnt consider it. It is one of the options. End of.

You seem to be confusing Sound Deadening with noise barriers. If you want to advise people to waste their money on sound deadening to try and reduce the amount of road noise then go ahead, bit harsh though dont you think?

Dynamat WAS good back in the day when it was the only product on the market. Now, its just like most other stuff be it not as good vfm nor as good at its job. Silent coat etc are much better.

Here is a thread on talk audio of a friends car having all its deadening/noise barriers etc fitted. This is how to make a car quiet:

All i said was look it up. Do some research. If he doesnt like it - he is not obligated to buy it. Take it easy.

and im just saying there is much better out there than the generic "look into Dynamat"

Interesting thread but 35kgs of weight added to the car! ;-)

I cant say the noise bugs me that much "but" I've been told when on hands free (via factory spec bluetooth) its very noisey in tge back ground maybe a bit of sound proofing would go a miss.

Does the VRS have less sound kit from the factory than other models? My scout is very good for a car. It's no rangerover, but comparable to the current A4 even shod with noisey bridgestones. We have a lot of coarse chip roads here.

Dynamatt is expensive and only a part solution. Three layers give the best results.

Layer 1. Deadener. These only need to be small to stop panels buzzing.

Layer 2. Insulation. This needs to be 100% cover or close to and seperates the noise transmitting surface from the top layer. Closed cell foam is very good.

Layer 3. Top barrier. This needs to be 100% cover or close to and the heavier and more impermeable the better. Lead would be awesome, but mass loaded vinyl and even factory carpets work well.

I've done two cars now and learnt a lot doing each one. On the next one I'm expecting far better results from a lower overall time and materials.

That's my link regarding the Noisekiller kit. Here for pics and stuff: http://www.wastedspace.co.uk/cms/2010/10/01/noisekiller-for-octavia/

Biggest difference in tone was the Bonnet. (Still amazed it's just bare metal under the firesheet!)

Biggest difference in boom and deep noise was boot (Spare wheel and thick under carpet sheet)

Next was the bit under rear seats

These latter two are dead easy to do as nothing complicated about the shape or anything and no carpets to take up or put down.

Bonnet is trickier, but you could probably cut to shape as you go.

The bit for the footwells are obviously cut to fit quite nicely - except for drivers one which sits on top of the carpet!

There are loads of mats and sheets on ebay for next to nowt. Knowing what I know now I would pick up heavy duty jobbies for boot and rear seats and sticky jobbies for wheel bay and bonnet. Total cost about £30 looking at it.

IF you were to pick it up for the boot and underseats, do you have a link?

well i changed my wheels today took off the originals with the conti sport 3.s on and replaced them with a set of a4 s line 18" black powder coated with the new vredesteins on . i am not sure about these wheels on the car they fit great but the main reason for the change was to see if these vreds was quieter and believe me they are its made a massive difference to the noise inside the car . so i am going to leave them on for a week and see if they grow on me if not i am going to swop the tyres round and put the original zeniths back on but it just shows you how important it is to get the right tyres on

Hiya I too have been finding the road noise a bit too much, It's a bit baffling as some vrs owners don't seem to have a problem with it so I'm trying other options before resorting to soundproofing.

I had the contact sports changed to Michelin ps3's followed by the alignment checked on a hunter machine but it didn't make much difference.

Next I'm planning on getting some smaller alloys.

Can I ask are the 18" alloys off your a4 the same width as the Neptunes?

I think Neptunes are 7.5" in width

Having always used premium tyres after a very disappointing experience with cheapo (they're made by xyz mate) tyres I was slightly horrified when I collected my car, the two new tyres on the front were Hankooks. However, I have become a fan. Much quieter than the Michelins or Contis that I had become used to. Wear and grip seem fine too.

So tyres are a major contributing factor. Mine are 17", so maybe not quite so bad as yours. I think Camskill on their site have a dB figure for each tyre.

I'm hoping to do something about the underseat and sparewheel well noise as this is reported to be a prime source (if not the only one). Certainly looks easy to do.

Do a search, there are loads of sites and fora about it, and not all trying to flog you an expensive product either.

no they are 8" wide but with an et of 43 so they actually fill the arches better the tyres are 235/40/18 but everything fits lovely

yes thats what i plan to do its only the rear of the car that i am not happy with . i have just got the car and will be keeping it 3 or 4 years so i dont mind the expence to have it right so if anyone as any personal expierience of solving the road noise ie what is the best stuff to use on the boot area i and many others would welcome your ideas

If you dont mind the expence then going down the multi layer route the way to do it for good results.

Pop on to http://www.talkaudio.co.uk and ask in the SQ/technical section or Sound Deadening and Fabrication section.

As in my link above some of the people who contribute to that site are competitors in SQ competitions and dealer/distriutors of all manor of products so you are garunteed to get good advice.

Would something like this do the job under the boot carpet and under the back seat?
