Help on elephant mod and mr muscle mod?

Featured Replies

I've seen these posted about now any DIY posts and step by step on how to do as I can't find anything

Thanks

Elephant mod is easy mate

Remove the engine cover and you can see the T pipe which comes from crank breather, and feeds into the EGR.

You need something to cap it off (I used the top of some posh smellies that fit perfectly lol) and then the loose bit of pipe venting from the top of the head can be put into a longer bit of pipe then either vented to atmoshphere, or into one of those oil catch cans

There is a post on the Mr Muscle "Bodge" if you can find it

Bit of a stupid question Lofty, if you do the elephant mod to the PD130 blt engine does it throw up the eml?

nope, not that i know of. but the egr will if you disconnect it.

im sure a few with vrs have done this mod

Thanks guys defnitly doing these on Friday when washing my intercooler out :)

Cheers Lofty, I'll have a mooch about and see if i can find anymore info.

if you can post your mr muscle results to the guide thread as it helps folk decide whether to do it

It doesn't cause a permanent light on BLT through doing the elephant "mod" as a result of the EGR being disconnected to the crank hose.

But it can throw an occasion fault as I had and had to clear it but haven't had it return

Not looking to be pedantic on this Lofty but with regard to MM you did say it needed doing at 80k and also that its not a one off (it is periodic cleaning). Therefore its not a mod and its not a permanent fix, its just a routine cleaning job as I see it

I only called it bodge as its not a permanent mod and its more of a cheap mechanism to clean the system with something that the system wasn't necessarily designed for, albeit with reported great results !

the fact that it needs periodic cleaning maybe onec every 100k miles, means that replacing the turbo with a brand new one is also a 'Bodge' as its going to get seized vanes again at about the same time.

my car has done over 200k miles, it first limped at 120k, and may limp again at 240k, thus lasting the same period as a new turbo, although now i have done egr mod and elephant mod it may never happen again!

The periodic cleaning i mentioned was something i would just like to do, not that its necessary.

So in essence, its permanent in the way that replacing the turbo is a permanent fix.

better £2.99 than £600

The elephant mod is worth doing if you want a cure for oil leaking from the EGR valve and cutting down on carbon build up, the higher compression of diesels means there's more blow by the piston rings causing heavier crankcase breathing. It shouldn't bring on the EML on a BLT.

It did on mine early on and threw engine MIL following a clean out of the EGR and manifold itself (removed) using manifold cleaner.

But that could have been as a result of crap that I had built up and because of cleaning out the EGR and manifold as best possible left some about that threw the light ?....I suppose I might just have been unlucky.

Driven the car for at least 10K....probably 20K and haven't seen any issues since

If I'd thought about it I could have run some stuff through the turbo but it was my first time cleaning the EGR and wasn't quite sure where the turbo was and was more frightened of breaking it by messing with it than anything.

As I am contemplating changing the turbo at some point I don't suppose it would hurt for me to give the cleanout a bash. I'm in no rush though as I'm certainly not experiencing the VNT issues and it doesn't seem to hesitant.

Presumably driving the car fast and having the turbo at good temperature can help clean it out naturally anyway, would that make sense ? Not that many can drive at those kind of speeds for long though  More likely stuck in traffic

A good belt does help yes. Symptoms of seized vanes are predominantly limp mode, usually by high revving/boosting, or by putting her under load in high gear. That's the main thing sticky vanes can do.

I'm in the group buy to delete my egr, does the breather pipe connect to the egr in any way? or is the elephant mod something i can do at a later stage?

Maz.

lovely looking bay btw.

Breather / elephant mod has nothing ro do with the egr

Thanks boys, I know noobs are irritating but coming from a 1989 Nissan 200sx to the Fabia takes some learning!

Vrs oh yes ^^^€€

Join the club I've come from subarus I can take an engine out within an hour no problem. Easy but these are a different ball game there are a few on here that are not very patient/ tolerant or helpful and just answer you posts ( which maybe stupid to the clued up lot) with a bad or idiotic reply but some are really relpfull and are really gud at helping and knowing there stuff I've learned a lot and have got a list of things to do without taking it to an expert or garage as I don't know diesels or vags but after there help its really common sense

Im a helper as you know, and imo everyone on here are helpers too! It just takes time to get to know them and theyre humour

Reserve judgement just now, as you dont want to irritate these ones as many of them are somewhat experts in the field.

Nothing wrong with noob questions. We were all noobs once :-) I think the more established members get a little frustrated with the number of new posts about the same topic.

When I get a chance I'll try to make a comprehensive common mods post

Yeah and then lower your car lol

Good thread! +2 on being a fabia n00b i came from Fords and a golf cabrio

certainly helped me out too i might have to give the elephant mod and mr muscle "bodge" a go :D

What's a fabia? ;)
