BMW M5

Featured Replies

On driven last night. Not my favourite program but it has cars

That BMW M5 is fantastic.I had earmarked an RS4 for my impending lottery win but sod that.

Phenomenal v10.I have never seen a speedo needle rise so rapidly  Absolutely great.Sounding fantastic and I want one in black

On a more disappointing note I see the boats in the harbour were 20 million quid.So if I win

An M5 used to live down the road from me at my last house and we'd regularly have a play in the mornings - both Scooby and M5 were pretty matched in the corners, but the M5 had longer legs for the straights. We were both completely blown away by a Tuscan S though which went sailing passed us

Now where did I put that winning lottery ticket?

It was on Fifth Gear, not Driven! :D

The V10 sounded nice - once warmed up. Sounded like a bag 'o spanners from cold!

That circuit in France looked good - nice twisty bits with a few drops.

Just like my octy does, wonder if the v10 needs to suck in extra air for emissions regulations on startup?

Shame that If you had 60k to spend you wouldn't get one till mid 2006! or was it 2007?

The new M5 is out here in Dubai. Saw one parked in between two M3s.

its out here, but the waiting list is very very long!

Is it only me that was impressed with Tiff's car control, the way he took the double right hander, in one long powerslide looked quiet impressive to me!! M5 nice car, Liked the electric Venturi more!!

still prefer the new coming RS4 though, although agreed the M5 is an awesome car.

i read an article about the engine in EVO mag a few months back, each cylinder has its own throttle body and idle speed valve... they are hand built like AMG lumps as well.

they are hand built like AMG lumps as well.

did you see topgear? Hand built, they make 10'000's a year.... they must be busy!

yeah...lol i thought the same, somehow i think theres only a selection of the top end motors that are actually "hand built" but you never know, they might have a large work force running 24hrs.

Unless thay are hand built by robots....

the chaps name was torsten or something andthe AMG was 'signed' by him, along with the other 18,000 + zonda's... Hand made my ass... parts probably are but thats it

Just read that the BMW M5 comes limited to 155mph, as all responsible german cars do. But, the dealer will remove the limit from customers cars if they wish, at no charge, letting it run up to 205mph! In a large 5 seater!

I wonder if I took my Superb in to a BMW dealer they could do a quick tweak to let it run to 205mph? I wouldn't expect them to do it free, I'd be quite happy to pay a reasonable amount, say

Reports are you have to wring the new M5's neck to make 'proper' progress? Sounds impressive fitted with a V10, but their new twin turbo diesel has more torque? Seems like they've tried the Japenese VTEC-type route. And can't help thinking I'd rather pick up a bargain old-shape M5 instead, with just400bhp but heaps more torque from that V8. If I had the spare cash of course :D

Not that keen on the new styling either, even in M5 guise with it's beefed up arches and big wheels.

Still an engineering marvel that engine though, saw the technical article in Evo on it too - amazing stuff.

With a big enough engine most things do tend to end up with a high top-speed :D

205MPH!!?!?!?? THAT'S FASTER THAN THE NEW FERRARI SPIDER!!!!!!!!

For the limited to be taken off I think you need to be in possesion of a racing license? Or be VERY good friends with a BMW dealer I would have thought :D

Steve

Agree with the Electric Venturi, To get 105MPH for that range of approx 200 miles is pretty good going.

You wouldn't hear it overtaking, would be a bit unnerving :D

Like the look of that Venturi - had a bit of a Renault Spider or VX220 look about it :)

Was funny to hear him say to Roger Moore that he'd nearly knocked two people over in it. Just because you can't here it doesn't mean it isn't there

Thats interesting.. AMG will let you do the same for their cars, but it costs 2k, and they just change the limiter to 186mph, which is the max safe speed for the tyres

Yeah, I do wonder - what tyres are they using on the M5, if they can withstand extended time at 205? Bet they're not cheap per corner :)

Yep, a friend's Dad had a similar hit moving from a 2000 M5 to a 645Ci.

There seem to be plenty of reasonable examples between 20-25k here now.

there are some tyres on the market now with a speed rating high enough, read it in evo :)

electric cars are too dangerous around town, as said people don't hear you so just walk out into the road. i had an electric 106 from work for a couple days and i came very close to hitting people a few times. walking or on a bike, people just came out.
