vRS cooling fan question?

Featured Replies

After some help and advice please...

When switching engine off yesterday on my Octy vRS the cooling fan started up. The engine was at normal temperature and had only been driving slowly up to the point of stopping and hence don't believe there was any reason for the fan to come on. I waited about 5 minutes for the fan to go off but continued to whir away. I decided to get back in car, restart engine and then switch off again. This time the fan stopped.

Can anyone confirm if this is normal or experienced similar? Is there a cool-down process on the engine which activates the fan?

The car has only done 3000miles since new in October so if this is a potential problem would like to get it looked at whilst under warranty.

Thanks for any help on this.

Might be better to post in the Octy forum. A Mod might move this for you.

If a DPF regeneration cycle is interrupted, the cooling fans will run on for a while to ensure the heat from the regen. process is dissipated safely - I think the reaction takes place at over 600 degrees C.

My CR170 did this the other night when I got home from work.

This is of course based on the assumption that your car is a TDI-CR....

This should be plonked in the Octavia II forum really.

Welcome from another GriffoVRS! Almost the same name.

If your car is a Blackline it is a diesel, and it definitely sounds like your car was doing a DPF regen - clearing out the soot in the DPF. Another sign that this is happening is that the idle speed is raised (along with the fans running to keep things cool).

If you switch off the car before the regen has completed, the fans will keep running for a bit.

Yup had same thing once before and as everyone else has said it does that if the DPF regen is interrupted. Things gets a little hot when the regen is happening :)

Can I ask, when I returned to my car earlier at lunch time, it felt quite warm inside - almost as if a heater had been left on and the dashboard felt a little warm too - far too warm considering the current outside temp (3 degree celcius).

I have a Blackline (which is diesel), is it likely this heat could have been generated from a DPF Regen?

Sorry, not experienced that and no idea either. Doesn't sound right though :S

I seriously doubt it. The dpf itself is probably surrounded by a multitude of heatshields and it would be against all known h&s rules and regulations, and even common sense to build a car in a way that it would transfer heat from exhaust to the inside of a car. I would say it is highly unlikely that a DPF regen had anything to do with temperature in your car.

Saying it was lunch time, maybe it was sun that heated the dash through the windsreen. Watch that episode of Mythbusters where they prove that a ciggarette lighter salesman's got his car blown up by leaving few boxes of lighters in a back seat.

hmm just felt too warm to be the Sun (though it was a blue sky and fairly sunny); it was very cold outside and when I opened the door, a waft of warm air came out. not what I'd expect. cheers for the responses though.
