Know it's the wrong time of year to be pricing up but for decent winter tyres in a 17" tyre is well over £600. It's easier and cheaper to keep the car at home. Unless I can work out the cheapest wheel size to have I don't think I'll be bothering. I was off all this week anyway so didn't need the car and the first day of snow the shop was closed so wouldn't have had to work anyway. I know of the benefits but I can get away with not driving if I have to.

read in several places a bag of cheap cat litter is better than grit to give a bit of traction, anyone tried it, for a couple of pounds and the daughter cat can make use of any unused stuff as well

They sound Ok but I'd put them on 17" steelies to save he hassle of fitting again and I'd change them myself. Aren't they just rebranded Nexens? If it was a Nexen summer tyre I'd run a mile. How good are they?

havent used them personally, but another member has (on the vRS, he came to a cumbrian meet with them on) and he rates them...

the nangkangs are £89 each in 205/45/17 and I have used them for 2 years now, and as long as its cold they are good! two of the cars on that steep snowy carpark have the nangkangs on (one being mine of course)

Superb traction,the car feels much more in control than it did when my old car was on summers.

We've had very bad snow here (South Shrops). I haven't driven the vrs in the snow yet but have to tomorrow. I must admit I'm slightly apprehensive, I'm sure the main roads will be fine but I've some hilly country lanes to navigate first!

Anyone after winter tyres I was looking the other day and noticed that mytyres.co.uk sell complete steel winter wheels with winter tyres already fitted.

With a nankang tyres for my car it was £98 a corner which I didn't think was bad considering it come pre-fitted to a wheel that you can just swap straight over. Also means you're not messing up your alloys in the winter etc.

I must have got a bargain then - full set of Nexen Winguards (the guy who fitted them was positive they're last years Hankooks); €280 fitted. I was in Germany at the time though.

First few hundred miles were not too pleasant - vibration and noise mainly. By the time I got home (650 miles later) they've settled down nicely. Still nice and composed on the Autobahn; not quite as stable as the summer Dunlops (OE) but they really have come into their own, inspiring a certain degree of confidence.

Parked up at home on Saturday in a 9" deep snow drift - no problems, even with the icy conditions the next morning. Great fun being able to use the snowed in 3rd lane of the motorway over the weekend!
