Engine Coolant Recurring Leak

Featured Replies

Thanks to all - some Silver Seal is on its way but I hope I won't need it soon.

BTW - no  mist on the screen this morning :sun:

Put it in last Saturday, 250 miles (including sitting in a loooong traffic jam last night) but no coolant loss this week when I checked this morning - looks like the slight leak has now been stopped (for good I hope, but we will see next year when the weather gets warmer) :sun:

Update

8 months later and still no virtually no loss (2-3mm in the header tank) of coolant after about 6k miles in both fast motorway and long traffic queues - so the Silver Seal definitely worked!

Long overdue update to my contributions in this thread - and it looks like the EGR cooler was NOT to blame after all (30+ months and two lots of Silver-seal later)!

Had the cambelt, pulleys and water pump replaced a few days ago, and the garage which did the job (Mr Clutch in Hayes - £395 + a "negotiated" free brake fluid change :D) pointed out that there had been a very slight weep (so not noticeable from below the car) of coolant past the seal between the pump and the block, which the Silver-seal presumably kept pretty much in check! Have done about 300 fast, hot miles since with no loss of coolant.

So, I was totally on the wrong track over that problem (very luckily as I never got around to getting the EGR valve changed :D)!
