Urgent help with trailer wiring

Featured Replies

"Re the "by-pass" units, try looking at some of the problems these are so said to be causing. I'm sure I have heard here of people with Octavias needing complete new ECU's because of faults that have developed with them. The only SAFE way of doing it is to do it properly; it might be expensive but it could be even more so if you don't"

Sorry I don't agree, I have fitted loads of these units and never had a problem, I guess the problem are down to how

they are wired !

And I bet they have sold thousands of these units with no problems at all

Fine, but I've read too many horror stories, plus I would want to preserve my warranty, which I doubt these units would, so would always get the job done properly.

I've red that the stabilty program also gets changed when a trailer is attached. Another reason not to just use a "By-Pass" system, which is apparently what I have.

Thanks mate. I'm trying hard to find one. Skoda Australia want at least $500 (I've been ringing around the dealers).

My wife gets home from Japan on 2 February and I'm trying to get it all sorted by then. My Yeti is brand new and it'll be a surprise for her and the kids. They know it's comming but they dont expect it to arrive until mid february.

Happy Days.

If any one know's where I can buy the cable and control box from at a reasonable price can you let me know.

I found this http://eshop.skoda-auto.com/cz/en/b2c/tow-bar-electricinstalation-for-yeti-cars-eea630002e4x--1 . It works out to be about $200 AUD but they wont ship to Australia.

I've got no problem in supporting my own country and buying one locally but if someone is trying to rip me off, I'll go else where.

Will they send to Australia? Do you have an email address for them? I'll order it straight away if they'll send it.

Done ordered. He said he didn't have it in stock but he will order it straight away and it should arrive friday. Now I just have to cross my fingers it gets to Australia byt the following friday. Royal Mail says 5 days but Aus Post are pretty hopeless on this end.

My wife and kids are in Japan (my wife is Japanese) and they return on 2 February. They think the new Yeti is not arriving until Mid February but I have had it since 16 January. I want to surprise them when I pick them up at the airport. Thing is the rear interior is now in peices because I pulled it apart before I realised the PF Jones kit is for a non-tow prep vehicle. I dont realy want to put it back together and then have to pull it apart a couple of days later.

Good thing is I have spoken to PF Jones and they are happy to refund me the coin as they currently cant supply a kit for a tow prep vehicle. Steve, the technical help guy at PF Jones started to explain how I could still use this kit by tapping into the can-bus wires on the tow prep plug. I can understand what he descibed and I have no doubt it would work but I realy dont want to start chopping the wires of my brand new car.

Of interest he said (with the VCDS coding) the the vehicle would display the trailer on the display and turn off the rear park sensors as per the genuine unit. Thing is he had only explained tapping 4 wires to the module they supplied and all the other wires from the module went to the trailer plug. He did mention tapping the high level brake light and earth and stuff but they weren't required for the unit to work. What I got from this is 2 wires and power wires - and + and the other 2 wires are the can-bus wires. I understand the can-bus wires run continuous around the vehicle and connect everything in series. These can-bus wires then carry a digital signal which has messages to turn on brake lights, indicators and stuff. For the ECU to recognise the trailer is attached the trailer module must add be adding a signal to the can-bus to tell the ECU there is a trailer.

Hope that makes sense. It's getting late here and I'm going to bed.
