PD105 DSG Remap advice

Featured Replies

Been thinking about getting a remap.

Has anyone had one done on a 105 DSG?

Due to the lack of mappers in my local area I have also been looking at blacksmoke.co.uk at their self remapping service. You email your stock map across they tweak it and send it back.

A few people have had it done on PD130s with good feedback but can't find much about these maps on a PD105.

My other option is to find an excuse to visit my sister in Manchester and pay a visit to Awesome GTI as I think their remaps are quite cheap.

Also not fussed about a custom map as the car is otherwise standard so a generic map will suite just fine.

Phil

Didnt you just get this car??

Yes I did.

Why?

Mine was done via shark and their tool so emailed mine, they tweaked and sent it back

Mines a 105 but not dsg. No difference in mpg, see signature. Map was added in July 11. More power for overtaking though which is nice and very smooth

If you still have a Skoda warranty.... trust me.... leave it be for when the warranty runs out.

I battled for a year for Skoda to replace my clutch which was faulty before i mapped it but when they noticed it was mapped they washed there hands of it like any other dealer would to get out of a warranty claim.

£1100 of my own cash later i have a new clutch......

Good point actually. The last thing I want is for something to go wrong and them not cover it. The whole reason we bought a car from a dealer is to have a warranty.

The car is actually quick enough. It's shortfall in power compared to the old car is made up for by the DSG really.

Just wanted a little bit more "go" available when needed.

That's also a possiblity. An STS where I can return to stock whenever I want.

Would have to save up my pennies for one of those though.

There was an offer not too long ago from one of Shark's dealers offering the STS for free!

Not trying to be controversial here or to start a slagging match - but I don't really understand why people want to remap their car???

I know all you are doing is telling the engine to behave in a different way but, why don't people buy are more powerful car in the first place? the extra cost of a remap soon mounts up which could equate to a more powerful car anyway? serious warranty issues? insurance issues (hassle getting decent quotes if at all)? extra pressures on individual components when the car might not be designed for that extra power? The majority of second hand buyers would take a wide berth of remapped cars imho. All this adds extra £££s.

I like the idea of buying my VRS, standard car out of the factory - no hassles.

Sorry, I just don't get it.

I agree with Mr T.

Perfectly happy with what I have. If I'd wanted more I would've bought a beefier motor.

Then again I have other machines with which to fiddle - my car is just for transport.

It would go so much better remapped!!

Different horses for different coarses and all of that mullarchy:D:D:D

Yep, the PD105 goes well remapped.

I'd go for a Shark map with the STS box if I were in your position.

A PD105 with a map takes it to pretty much bang on what a PD130 puts out as standard.

I don't see how this can stress components further than they are designed.

Also the same 6 speed DSG is used in PD140, CR140 and CR170 engines so it can handle those just fine so there is no worry there.

I might save up a bit and get a Shark map with STS. I hear nothing but good things about Shark maps and the STS would be really handy.

I had my BMW mapped by chipped uk. Same as mentione by others on here. You email them your map, uploaded on the OBD gizmo they send you. They then emailed me back 2 maps. Yes 2. A mid level map and a full monty map, plus my original map. So you end up with 3 maps on the handheld gizmo. You can swap them as you require and when my car went back intot he dealers i wrote the original map back on to it incase they went sniffing about. Each time the map is written it flashes the counter or something so it never looks like it has been mapped.

Advantages of this are that the dealer will never know its been mapped and if they update your ECU at any time then you dont loose your expensive remap as you still have it on the handheld gizmo ready for uploading when you collect you car and get it home again.

I have never told my insurance of any remaps i have ever had but from what i can gather insurance isnt really an issue if you go to the right company.

Do it and enjoy it mate. Remaps are hardly a new fangled invention so if you use a reputable tuner they know what their doing.

Watch this space, as we may well be adding a dealer in York in the very near future :)

Alternatively Mobitune could always help you out too, or if you're looking for the switchable option then the STS is for you.

Thanks

Definitely after the switchable solution...

Will just have to wait for another one of your free STS offers! :)

Dealers will find out its been remapped they see so many different values changed and how many times the ecu is accessed.

If its in warranty just leave it alone.

Outside warranty then go for it.

I Love my shark remap now i have a decent LOBA clutch to go with it, its transformed my car.

It's all personal preference which makes us all a little different. I wanted the 1.9 due to hearing issues of blown turbos on the pd140. I test drove one that had a turbo replaced.

With that in mind I bought the 105 and had it remapped for a small fee in the grand scheme of things. I really like the way my car drives and have tinkered with a few other bits. Would love it to be as quick as a vrs but at the moment I can enjoy the £120 a year tax and 51mpg. Like I say everyone is different, do what you feel comfortable with :)

Well I have decided today that I won't be getting a remap.

First thing was that I took the car to the dealer to get them to look at the squeak we were getting on startup. They have diagnosed based on noise a DMF.

Now I wouldn't want to risk having the warranty not being upheld etc.

Plus when I left there while I was driving round I but my foot down properly for the first time really. I was trundling along at about 30mph and floored it... I think it will be fast enough for the time being. I think the DSG really does make up for the "lack" of power. The 1.9 luckily is very punchy in it's torque delivery which also makes up for the lower power as it makes it "feel" faster than it is.

I may get one some day. If I do it will definitely be a shark with STS.

Phil

Good choice Phil also... be careful dealers look at forums ;)

  • Author

Yeh. I am aware they can do.

But like I say I'm not touching it while I have warranty anyway so nothing to hide.

Just hope they get the DMF sorted which I'm sure they will. The tech they dragged out the garage was pretty sure the noise was the DMF and backed up by me telling him about the chattering I heard pulling into the drive the other day.

As i said. It wipes something on the ecu so it dosent show up that it has been viewed or re-written etc. Someone who knows more about mapping will probably be able to advise better what actually happens.

You think the 105 is going to be a real slug, but driven with a degree of verve, it can be quite spritely.

Yeh I'm pleasently surpised with how much ooomph it's got for just 105hp.

And when driven gently it just wafts along very nicely without a sweat and feels very strong.
