Tell me about it put it in ten days ago for a head gasket cam and water pump due to get it back today now this fummmming ain't the word !!

I'm surprised it went through the sump I thought it would lift it off the ramp personally!!

Same dunno if you can see a pic I'm on my phone .

The crank should be strong enough to not get damaged, bearing in mind the forces its under when the engine is running. I would definetly get them to show you it with the sump off so you can check though

Sump is only made of Ally, very soft indeed so will struggle taking the weight of the car, I'd say it's highly unlikely it's damaged crank unless they dropped it right down on it at a fair decent pace.

What garage?

Thanks guys i presume it was on a lift ramp so I no they don't come down at a massive pace . Fingers crossed he agreed to let me be there to check , but then if I miss something I agreed it was ok .. Any damage would be clearly visible wouldn't it.?

front left (as the way the car points, i.e passenger side) should be OK. If its the right side, there's a fair to middle'ing chance it will have taken out the oil pump / chain / guide assembly..... Definitely ensure the oil pump wasn't affected. Aside from that, should be fine. The crank is a tough old beast. I've been hands on with a couple. :D

Never touched a vRS crank yet, but I remember trying to balance a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost (1907) crankshaft for a customer once, had done over 250k and didn't even look worn, went through 3 flappy grinding disc's trying to balance it, just goes to show they don't make them like they used too.....

TDI crank is tougher as subjected to greater forces during combustion than a petrol. Its a hefty beast. The flimsy plastic oil pump assembly is not though....

They'll have had the axle stand under the sump to do the water pump, one of those things that can happen; albeit very rare.

I would imagine its only cracked, so won't have done any damage other than making the sump itself into a paper weight!

I'd imagine so, but I was astonished that something made over 100 year's ago was so accurate and in such amazing condition, and very well machined, all the counter weights was individually made and attached to the crankshaft via bolt's, I suspect the crank alone weighed 50kg being a straight 6 was long too, only rev'd to 2500rpm though

EDIT: Found a pic of one, to think this was machined in 1900's, even modern day steel crank's aren't this smooth in some cases.

Ensure they use the correct engine oil.
