Coilover kit or new springs?

Featured Replies

My front offside spring has broken right at the top, causing a bloody annoying 'KABONG' when turning the steering. I know this will involve at least changing both front springs and seeing the price of genuine springs I'm wondering if it's worth investing a little bit more into a cheap(ish) coilover kit? Can anyone recommend a cheap(ish)kit, I'm not after lowering the car as I use it daily to ferry my 9 month old boy around and tbh the front is low enough as it is. I have seen some sub £200 kits on ebay and don't want to buy sh*te. I am quite capable of fitting the units myself so just need advice on whats good and whats pants please.

Thanks in advance.. :)

If you are going for cheap then JOM's or Pro sport seem popular..

cheaper coil overs generally don't like going too low as they do not have as good rebound, but as you are keeping std height should be no problem.

Hate to say it but 'you get what you pay for'

Well i bought joms £165 from ebay, and tbh i love them, they aint solid they do have movement but i have them half way adjusted on the front they have like 2" gap from tyre to arch and it's a nice stance that it has, the roll has been greatly reduced, normal driving with them is great, and cornering aswell, roundabouts are more fun aswell since i can go faster around without the car wanting to pitch to the side

Watch out as the vrs strut has some extra brackets for the drop link setup. Some sets may not have this

They will if he buy's for the VRS though as the links show.

But yes few folks been caught out when buying multi purpose coil overs for std Skoda range

You should have a look at the AP coilover kit its made by KW / weitec, so good quality i think its around £400 price range only problem. or just change the springs for weitec ones i had the spring and shock kit on my old vrs only lowers 30mm so looks fairly stock .

Hi and thanks for all the replies.

Sorry I didn't get back last night, bad cold and slight OD on Night Nurse meant I was gonzo'd til this morning >.<

I think I'm gonna go for the Pro Sport kit from Damian@DPM Performance, £199.00 inc VAT and delivery.

I know you get what ya pay for but in my case, with baby eating up all my income, it's more get what I can afford :)

For less than £50 more than stock front springs I'll be getting front and rear stainless shocks and springs that are TUV tested and come with 5 year warranty... simples

When I fit them I'll try and get some before, during and after pics, maybe with a few scuffed knuckles and sweary face pics too....

Just been reading up on the forum regarding the Pro Sport Kits and some people say I will need to replace the Drop Links with shorter Merc Vito ones, does anyone know if Pro Sport have sorted this yet or will I have to source new Drop Links as well?

I seen that thread to, something to do with the drop link arm in strut is lower down so the std VRS drop link sits lower. Best to email Damian as he is top block and supplier.

Just had this reply from Damian:

"It'll depend how low you go, sometimes new drop links are needed though with most members going for the Merc Vito ones."

As I don't intend on lowering at the moment, just changing for value for money over standard spring price, I should be ok with standard Drop Links.

i thought these def needed new droplinks? still think its odd that a supplier makes a part apparently for a specific car, and yet it doesn't work with the stock parts without fitting other stuff from another manufacturer completely

Doesn't the distance between arb and strut stay the same no matter how low you go?: /

To make you feel better mine did exactly the same today!!!!!!!!!!! B4STARD car

You will DEFINATELY need other drop links with the pro sport kit. I fitted mine end of November and will be going back to standard as soon as the weather allows it. The kit allows you to absolutely slam the car but it's very harsh on rough roads and I can't stand it, wish I'd went for a better kit for more cash now, but if you still go for it then its Merc vito that you need, got a pair on eBay for 15 quid m8. Sorry to put a dampener on it for you

I would go for an intermediate coilover kit at about £400. AP and FK Highsports or the likes. I have my eye on the FKs. I would prefer to stay away from kits under £200

It is very bad from a manufacturer or supplier to state may need none VRS drop lnk's or parts to fit a VRS made kit. you would be taking a risk even if you do not lower the car to fit these.

Normally I would agree if the strut had the drop link bracket in exactly the same place on the strut a the VRS std strut or a decent set of coilovers.

Fact is with the Pro Sport kit has the bracket welded way too low on the strut forcing the std Drop link to sit a lot lower and that will hit wishbone on a lowered stance, even risk hitting on a none lowered stance

I would tend to agree here, you get what you pay for and the FK's , AP's are best mid range . You could also look in car part sales section for bargain coilover kits that are often appearing,

After a long think and counting my limited pennies I have gone with new standard VRS springs from http://www.skodaparts.com/ came to £166 delivered. Thanks for all the input but it seems like unless I have £400+ to spend then it's probably not worth the aggro of the cheaper kits. Seeing as I saved a few quid overall I bought myself some Osram Nightbreaker Plus H4 lamps for the front so I might be able to avoid some of the feckin' huge pot holes that constitute English roads....

Thanks again for the help...

Well I guess if you where not bothered about lowering it, then a standard setup is best.

Is that 2 fronts for 166 delivered or a full set?
