Hi everybody,Just a simple question really. I have a VW Polo 1.2 70(HTP) and I have been wondering whether to use Shells V-Power petrol,to see if it would give the engine any tangible benefits.Is it worth it, given the type of engine I have,or is it going to be an expensive waste of time/resources.Cheers!

Personally i think it will not make a difference to you.

What is the harm other than 10 pence a litre extra for a tankful and try it,

or better still 5 pence a litre more and try Tesco Momentum 99 RON.

Sainsbury 98 ron Super Unleaded might cost the same as you pay for your current unleaded and worth a try.

She'll v power 99 is designed for higher tunes engines - it aids forced induction cars more than n/a cars from what I have seen.

Wouldn't waste my money on it for an n/a polo. I use it in my vrs as the gel filler cap states 98 as it's tipple of choice!

A lot of people forget or don't no that shell v-power apart from giving more power with the right engine it also cleans your fuel system as well keeping your injectors and engine nice and clean gets rid of all the carbon deposits . which must be good for the any engine which in turn must save you money in the long run.

i use v power all the time the car just seems to run better.

But only on Jap cars or turbo cars - dont ask me why!

Other cars i just use normal fuel - but as Bill says,

i fill up every 4th tank just to get the injectors cleaned. :-)

The only way to find out for sure is to try it for a couple of tanks IMO.

You also need to be aware of the placebo effect if you do try it though.

In my old Vectra SRi 130 1.8 I was always able to notice a discernible difference between Optimax, as V-Power was then, and normal 95 from Shell or anywhere else. This was over multiple tanks and not thinking about which fuel I had in, because most of the time I forgot anyway. So I ended up sticking with it.

With the 2.2 SRi 150 I had after, there was no difference at all in the way it ran on any petrol so stuck with cheapest.

With my current Mk1 vRS Octy I pretty much only run V-Power now either that or Tesco 99 due to the fact the filler cap states 98. With this again I do notice a difference of I use 95 Ron.

The car needs to have a requirement for higher octane fuel IMO.

Unless you have a tuned or highly stressed engine I doubt you'll see any benefit.

We've always used vpower diesel and petrol, like above regardless of the vehicle vpower will clean the fuel system and defo will run better IMO all of us run it , audi a3 , corsa, golf and the little arosa with a 999cc engine

My mechanic has always run his cars on V Power/Momentum. I asked why he bothered in his old Jetta and he found it used to pink less and throttle response was better

The fuel system cleaners used in V-Power are exactly the same ones as used in the standard Shell petrol. They come from exactly the same tank when the tankers are loaded at the Bulk plant.

And Tescos own brand fuels have detergent additives too.

Used Shell Optimax in my Scooby, but I've not found any benefit in any of the (less powerful) vehicles I've owned since then. Now put in whichever is most convenient

Japanese petrol is high-octane compared to the UK's petrol, think they're about 100. Thusforth, Japanese cars enjoy their expensive go-go juice!

I use V-Power every 6-7 tanks. Just blasts out the baby a little- doesn't help economy much.

If you think the more expensive petrol has your car running smoother you might then save petrol on similar trip.

Detergents & cleaning out engines that are running perfectly well is not always automatically a good thing.

Service properly, check and set tyre pressures & do not carry un-necessary crap in a car (weight) can achieve the same for no extra expense.

Wiki is not always right or very current but it gives some idea about other countries fuel.

We have Winter Petrol & Diesel on sale in the UK just now, so your MIN 95 ron might be as good as it gets just now.

No they are not!............

Totally different cleaners and friction reducers......................I,ve being using V-power (previously Optimax) since it first came out ..................and I've always been reading various reports/tests into the stuff when done in the motoring press.

Also I am 95% certain that i one of the reports I saw It stated that the stuff wasn't a case of just add an additive package to a standard grade to the road tanker at the refilnery where they fill up (as done will all 95 ron fuels etc)......and that it was a totally seperate made-up petrol and "premixed/made" before the road tanker fills up!

I've run my car for 85,000 miles on all sorts of standard petrol. Long periods or standard Shell and Asda in that time though.

Last few tanks have been Shell but I've never noticed any consistent theme in differences between Oil company or Supermarket branded fuel.

This week, for no particular reason, I filled up with Shell V-Power, about 47 litres and straight away there's been a big difference. Its nothing to do with the warmer weather. I have genuinely found it easier to get better economy than comparable conditions with 'cooking' petrol. At the moment, without really trying its over 10% more efficient for the 7% extra cost.

I'm surprised by this but will carry it on for 4 or 5 tanks to get a clearer idea.

I paid £1.419 vs £1.339 for 95RON but its gone up a penny since. Could probably get it 1 or 2p cheaper if I took a slight detour locally.

It's about £1.45-50 up in Pentwyn, I haven't looked for a while though, Tesco 99 currently at £1.349 , Sainsbury 97, about £1.32 IIRC.

Sainsburys is always cheaper but as you can see lower octane, but the food is steep lol

I use BP ultimate or Shell V power and deffo feel the difference. Less welly needed than lower octane petrol, so overall cost is worth it.
