another question, cooling system fabia 1.4

Featured Replies

Firstis the capacity of the cis running fine, when cool and when its up to temp. No steam, no smoke, not gone psst halfway on guage, heater working well. No puddles in footwell. I probably added a litre of water in totsl over last 2 days, but did not bleed system during refill.

Appreciate any tips or links to diagrams that are relevant!oling system? Its a 2000, w reg 1.4 fabia.

Since doing coolant change on friday, I have driven the car twice, first time 50 cooling system today. It hasnt gone past halfway on temp guage, would I hear the fan come on? In my last car it was so loud, there was no mistaking it! Is it hsrd to hear it?

There is no sign of leaking anywhere, although plan to run it on my drive with bonnet up to see hopefully what is going on.

Should I be worried? The car Imile round trip and less than 6 miles today, and I have had to top up the y, approxin terms of what the temp guage ris there any bleed screws to ensure air locks do not occur? If not, shoild the car be run to op. temp with the expansion bottle cap off and keep topping up as the coolant gets further round the system?

Is there a diagram of the cooling system on here anywhere to help me understand better, please?

What Iading will look like when this happens, thanks.

When flushing and refilling the cooling system, Ihow hot should the car be when the cooling fan cuts in?

Please explain I

Update, I now know the fan cuts in as it should, so ignore that part of the question! Very sure I have a major leak, having driven 10 miles and put another litre of water in !

Now back home , bonnet up time, yippeee (or not) .

It sometimes takes a little while for the heater to fully fill up with coolant, so it's possible that the level will drop after a drive, the fan may not come on if you are driving about because there Is enough air flowing over the radiator to keep it cool..

there are no bleed points on these cars, its a seof bleeding system.. best thing to do is park it on a slope facing uphill with the top off the expansion tank and heater turned to hot and run up the engine, this should purge all the air from the cooling system.

same as teflontom.. give it a few days if your still having to top up after a week look at the suspects.. water leaking from front of car, Mayo under oilcap etc

Thanks. Should I top up when I get a warning beep, or should I be taking off the cap and checking every day? The top up bottle is a bit too stained to see the level eadily through the container, if you get my meaning!

There is no lesking onto driveway during the night, nor when its running, as I've checked a couple of times now. Already had sniff test done which had the result I wanted, there was no change in colour of chemical during test. Just since I changed the coolant, I keep having to top up. I didn't have to during the first week of owning the car! Wish I'd left it alone to be honest.

Thermostat failure is not unknown on the 8v/mpi. They break up internally, and this could explain the not getting up to temperature.

Apparently a common leak point on all models is the fan switch on the radiator. This is on the passenger side at the back of the radiator.

Try a torch to see if that helps see the level. If your warning beep is working satisfactorily, then you could rely on that to indicate when a top up is needed. Such significant loss indicates a problem that needs attention though.

The points to check are any that you have disturbed when changing the coolant. Ensure the hose clips are seated properly. Also make sure you use the original type supplied with the car (IMO). Haynes recommends replacing the OE ones with the worm-drive type, but I found these just tore through the hoses, and rarely made an adequate seal. The OE ones are easy enough to work with using molegrips anyway.

I'm currently working through a niggly issue with my cooling system. It does not get up to temperature when driven on a morning on drive to work, and coolant appears to have leaked slightly (is visible on the bonnet underside, near thermostat). On drive back it's perfectly fine and warms up like normal, and no sign of further leak. Ordered a UV torch off ebay with the hope it will reveal the leak, as OAT coolant (the red/pink/purple stuff) is meant to fluoresce under UV light.

I've checked all the hoses. The engine is getting up to temp. The fan has cut in when needed, and no overheating, even when stuck in traffic for 20 mins. The only sign of water marks is around the expansion tank. I am wondering if this could be the problem? Definately, a million per cent sure no leaking when car is just parked, I will double check the side of the rad. Thanks for advice.

Right, expansion tank and new cap bought and fitted. So far this car seems to be very easy to work on compared with my pug 309 gti, which was a bit cramped to say the least!
