20K Basic Golf, WTF.

Featured Replies

If people are mug enough to pay for brand image then that is up to them. I don't really agree with brand image at all but sometimes it pays to play along unfortunately because of things like resale value etc. However the Octavia should should hold its money pretty well and is identical vertually unside to the Golf and a cheaper and more practical offering. I guess it is horses for courses and each to his own.

Having said that Skoda's legendary reliabilty and customer service seem to be plummeting. I went into my local dealers (whose service manager is an asshole tbh) to get a few fuses and the place was chock with people ranting about issues.

  • People are sheep, they place ridiculous faith/loyalty in certain brands, when the distinctive quality of that brand over others expired long ago

  • *cough* Skoda *cough* Chris

  • Because it's a Golf. VAG need to earn money and have a selection of brands in the marketplace which they need to keep in seperate price brackets for different people who care about badge image.

Car might hold its money on paper but you might well get a shock come trade in time. Dealers are looking to cash in at both ends, high prices, crap trade in and nasty finance rates.

I've no idea what I'll do at next car time. Damn sure I'm not paying 20k for an 'ordinary car' that should be closer to 12k.

Still car sales are up so I must be in the minority.

Father in law has a 2011 Range Rover Vogue, V8, mint condition, 20 something K miles on the clock - £74,000 new. Dealer reckons he'd get £30k to £35k on a trade in.

'Asking Prices' are on windscreens and in Adverts because there are people that come and pay Asking Prices and deal on the price they see.

Dealers need to start someplace and go from there, and can not going killing the market by selling too cheap.

They are in it for the long haul and need profits and percentages, or turn over and cash flow.

Or no boom and bust.

All these ex demo GT86 & BRZ's sitting in Dealerships and not selling will need to come down in price, sell or Toyota/Subaru will need to export them back out of the UK so that supply and demand stops them dropping through the floor in residual value.

There is a glut of them. that will effect New Buyers considering buying them.

Over Year old first cars now 2 Reg plates old.

(there are bargains to be had for plenty of buyers, but not if looking and paying at 'Asking Prices' being advertised)

The UK and Europe is full of second hand cars and a lack of buyers for them.

Cs.rogers is that Range Rover a petrol? They plummet as you need to have an oil well to run them. If a Diesel should be much more. I would sell a vehicle like that privately. As to finance rates, i would buy nearly new next time and arrange finance elsewhere as dealer desls are very rich :( You would think they would offer good terms in as recession.

As for Toyabaru dealers told me they were coming in strictly limited numbers :/ Does seem to be a lot about for such a highly rated car :/

Re GT86 & BRZ.

You might get 2 different stories on limited numbers for the UK depending which Dealership tells the tale..

As i understand from reading it,

Toyota got the UK,

so 10 GT86 for each 1 BRZ brought in.

Different countries they got different percentages.

Just on Autotrader today, 89 Toyota, lowest Asking Price £20,000

& 24 Subaru.

I used to work at a Landrover main dealers and I only ever saw one petrol on which was in the used section and they couldn't give it away! Everyone wanted diesel and a tow bar on their new RangeRovers. I imagine if he forked out in the first place the thing is worth more to him. GB price would be stronger if its petrol though as there is almost no market for them in NI.

with the premium brands having better residuals the cost analysis does not come down in favour of the Skoda.

Actually the Skoda Yeti has one of the best residuals in the UK. It is up there in the top ten or higher from memory, and better than a Golf!!!!

Lots of cars are company lease car. Under our scheme you can lease a similar spec A3 or Golf for less money than an Octavia, so unless you are desperate for the big boot why would you take the Skoda?

I won't disagree with you on this as I know it to be (partially) correct and there will always be exceptions, but I don't want to buy a Yeti. In fact in the top ten for residuals (as issued by Glass's Guide) only 3 non SUV type vehicles featured.

Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5D (73.4 % after three years)

Audi Q5 2.0 TDI (73.2 %)

Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI (72.5 %)

VW Scirocco R was sixth in the listing, Fiat 500 1.2 in eighth and the VW Golf R in tenth.

I said partially as with anything it will obviously depend on spec (note the Yeti in the top ten is the 2.0 TDI 4x4 140 bhp elegance), and I would never, ever buy a Golf, absolutely overpriced for what it is.

And I really do not like diesel, it is the fuel of satan :)

As opposed to poof power? :smirk: , depends of what type of motoring you do, often comes down to tool or toy.

Whatcar has the new Octy as only marginally more depreciating than Golf too. Yeti is a fiercely desirable family car and actually a bit of a waiting list i hear. Not driven the 1.4 Yeti but driven a 1.8 tsi and that was lovely: engine refined and pretty strong in terms of go. Won't give diesel economy though. Even 1.2 goes ok i am told.

Don't get me started on the new Kia Pro C'eed. :@ a 1.6 diesel 'SE' with only 133bhp and only 46mpg combined.... £120 a year tax disc. Suck my Skoda, Kia!

On the Golf price front, I liken it to the apple mentality with regards to brand image/perception. :hi:

I love apple too :D

What torsion beam? Didn't know they did that on new golfs? Thought it was all multi link?

They're putting torture beams on lower spec (eg normal) cars

Guess they save a couple of euros on production costs per car, plus stop folks buyer a cheaper model and tuning to same/better spec than higher model

Was amazed by the same thing over here. Mk7 Golf with the 2.0 TDI and all the toys you might actually want is close to €30k.

Same Octavia spec is about €25k :smirk:

was in vag dealer here in Germany. they had a golf 7 highline with dsg 1.4.

This is a brand new car. sticker price €40K...

mental! !

But worth every penny :) why cos its a golf :p

Give it a few years we will start to see an increase in Chinese cars! Hopefully their low cost will give a kick up the other brands backside to sort out their prices

Nah they'll just get more bloody expensive :(

Nah they'll just get more bloody expensive :(

That's true. :( it should be a nail in their coffin but as previously mentioned finance deals make all the over priced cars obtainable

Finance noooo that's swearing cash only :)

I used to think the MG6 was overpriced at 16k...maybe not so now..?
