  • People are sheep, they place ridiculous faith/loyalty in certain brands, when the distinctive quality of that brand over others expired long ago

  • *cough* Skoda *cough* Chris

  • Because it's a Golf. VAG need to earn money and have a selection of brands in the marketplace which they need to keep in seperate price brackets for different people who care about badge image.

I bought my last bike while my wife was away on a cruise with her mother. I left it in my garage. Everyone knew about it apart from the wife. After 3 weeks she still hadn't noticed it!

She fell over laughing when she eventually saw it. Job done.

Now when she goes away, the first place she checks on her return is the garage.

The a3 and base golf are the same price nearly I think the golf is slightly more ?

Been wondering about this, so thought I'd find out the list OTR price (rather than the price you may end up paying after haggling) for entry level spec in 1.6 TDI (105bhp CR) trim:

- Seat Leon £17370

- Skoda Octavia S £18040

- VW Golf S £18910

- Audi A3 SE £19510

Not sure how the equipment levels compare though but an interesting (and perhaps not unexpected!) spread. Also interesting that people are happy to pay more to have a Skoda than a Seat but not a similar amount to get a VW over a Skoda.

Chris

^^^ wow not a lot of difference there so the skoda isn't a poor mans vw or audi ! The seat is where the difference is could this be that Spain is on its knees and needs the currency ?

Apart from exterior shape and interior trim, you'll not find much difference under bonnet and drive train between octy, golf, Leon and A3. It is mostly about the badge and a way of trying to give the impression of power through financial wealth in a "mine cost more than yours" hierarchy. Since we are a hierarchical animal, then it's pretty usual behaviour, but If you know little about cars, then it's more likely to appeal, otherwise you'll buy the cheapest version of that family variant.

Don't understand why people complain so much about badge snobbery.

So everyone's telling me that they only buy clothes from m&s or primark but never touch topshop, superdry, river Island, Beats headphones or Iphones?

This is whole reason i bought my Octavia over the A4, more BHP (this was more important! :) ) cheaper to insure, just as many toys, much cheaper to buy so therefore i could afford the younger model.

There are curtain nicer aspects to an Audi over an Octavia, this becomes very evident once your inside but the Golf and Octavia are that that far apart.

VW don't do a polo estate in gti form and neither do they do a golf estate in gti form - Skoda have a niche here with the vrs models.

I read a write up about the new focus st estate saying how it was the only car in its market... Rofl! :) Octavia vrs is bigger but slightly less power...

Yeh but the Focus ST estate is a far better car....
  • 1 month later...

Can't comment on the estate, but I wasn't a fan of the ST. Not comfortable, dash is too cluttered and frankly I'd feel too much like a boy racer in one. The Octy is more subtle and is as entertaining.

I have a MK1 Octavia very nice car to drive :)average over 30k a year, but I had to use a VW Bora for a while, and If I am honest it was quite a bit better inside... Need to stick with Skoda though as i need an estate...

In europe, you can get the Bora as an estate - Bora Variant

Bora estate is just a Golf with a different front end and rear lights surely.

It's all about the badge; what people perceive of it and what one you are willing to pay for being on the grill.

Seat will change that with th new Leon FR/Cupra estate but that's always been my reasoning; the octy VRS estate being a smart mans (smart=tight?) Golf GTi family hold all!

The new st focus estate is a far more entertaining steer than the VRS. :)

That's exactly what it is.

But its a pity we get such a limited selection of VAG motors in this country (UK)

Most of the Bora Variants I've seen are 1.8T 4Motions, but also several TDI 4Motions

But surely that's because some colder country's are a much bigger market place for these compared to the UK, just like Merc 4matics and Beemer x drive equipped models being available in other parts of the world.

Its true the benefits of 4x4 are more clearly evident in countries where you can pretty much guarentee 4+months of snow & ice, but there would still be a market for these cars in the UK, albiet in smaller numbers

Agreed. And possibly why both BMW and Mercedes have changed tact on our right hand drive market this year. Vag have nearly all the Audis available with a 4wd system of one description or another and VW offer it on a couple of models, same as Skoda. Not too bad really but I know hat you mean; its annoying when other markets get offered more options than our UK importer allows. :(

Vag are really outpricing themselfs but i think everyone is doing it, that new Kia C'eed sporty thingy moboby is 25k isnt it? Its a damn Kia, yes they are good cars nowadays but this is where they have the gap in the market, good cars, cheap!

All down to the finance trap, before when people only bought cars when they had the money in their back pocket the price was as it should be but since every man and his dog is able to get finance on a car they have shot up.

For instance BMW's in yesteryear were for snob's and ****'s only, now you can have your very own M3 for £500 per month, yes that is still the price of a mortgage but when it boils down it to im on minimum wage and i can afford an M3...thats just not right.

The little VW Up! i think the top of range (excluding GT) is called the Black/High up, something like 12k..for a sodding super mini?! Are you bloody insane!

Cars are becoming way overpriced, or had been incredibly undervalued for years. Since the credit crunch hit I have the feeling that the price of cars has just gone up and up.

In terms of brand pricing, I have bought both of my Fabias as i felt they offered great value for money, which they do. However, I am becoming increasingly concerned that as the new Skodas are released, pricing wise(sp), they are not that far off the price of more premium brands. And as others have said, with the premium brands having better residuals the cost analysis does not come down in favour of the Skoda.

When I come to change my cars it is going to be fun deciding which way to go :)

Skoda are no longer the " cheap" good car option as they aren't cheap, the Koreans are the skoda of yesterday , and then the Chinese , then Indian, as for the price tag of the vw ? Cos they can ? Without the discount on skodas vat off skodas would be expensive for what they are

Seb, unfortunately I think you are right. without the VAT free the price of the cars is just too high. Although I was quite surprised when watching the ad for the new Octavia. I guess you have been able to order one for a couple of weeks but there is already a £500 contribution if using Skoda/VAG finance (plus I think £1000 on the Rapid). So perhaps by the time I want a new car VAT free may be back on? Well you can live in hope. Otherwise i shall switch to another marque.

The spec on the 4 VAG ' S ' are virtually the same with only very minor differences.( probably to justify the price difference)

Altho the prices have gone up, but when you actually look across virtually all brands there is now very little option wise you can add to the specific model you are looking at.

It seems that only Ford or Vauxhaull still give you quite a few options to add on top of your choice.

I was almost hit at a junction by a White VW tonight at a junction with someone cutting a corner,

blue rinser in what looked like a brand new car with personal reg.

Had a nosy at it when she stopped and thats when i was surprised to see it was a Jetta.

Looked pretty nice, and i had never paid attention or spotted one before.

Checking the prices out i see there is a good choice of engines and well priced.

Looks like a VW that can match or undercut Skodas.

Need to have a nosey at one in the Dealership.

Don't get me started on the new Kia Pro C'eed. :@ a 1.6 diesel 'SE' with only 133bhp and only 46mpg combined.... £120 a year tax disc. Suck my Skoda, Kia!

On the Golf price front, I liken it to the apple mentality with regards to brand image/perception. :hi:
