Run her into the ground

Featured Replies

After nearly a year of faultless ownership

I was considering an upgrade to a more "Prestige" car, after all life is too short.

BMW 335i, A5, or perhaps a VRS petrol??

However It appears that my "Bargain basement" 58 reg £5199 Octavia 1.8 TSI is simply too good to let go

I approached a local dealer and was offered £2750 for "Olly" as a part ex!

Well I might as well run her for a few more years, possibly into the ground?

There seems to be quite a lot of Mk1 Octys still going strong

Absolutely agree on your decision, i'm just going to run mine into the ground...while trying to maintain her and service her regularly.

Too much money for a new car these days its silly.

Where does that saying even come from?

Agreed, due to the huge value drops of petrol vRS's I shall be keeping mine for the foreseeable Future.

Life's too short? It's the longest thing you'll ever do!

Plus1 :)

New bigger Octy 3 wouldn't fit in my garage anyway!

Same here. Would like to change car but prices for anything remotely interesting are bordering on ridiculous.

We buy any car offered £3180.... a little more than the local dealer mind but they always knock you down when you turn up for the final appraisal.

Must be some desperate folk out there...

I feel the same about my 58 1.8 TSi. I was not too keen on look of the later FL (Botox might have been better).

So if I soon have to spend a few hundred here and a few hundred there, I still have the car I really like.

If some other model, that I like as much, appears in the future maybe I'll change my mind then, but not for now.

new or nearly new cars are stupid money.

It's a fecking 10% house deposit for a car!

Years ago I always tried to buy "demonstrators" under one year old.

Big price reduction, warranty, me as first registered owner, etc etc.

But that seems to have faded now. By the time you work out the best "new car" discounts etc., the demos seem to have little advantage.

Probably better off buying a low mileage 2 year old car?

I find it hard to believe you can run a car into the ground anymore. In years gone by cars used to rust, that doesn't happen now (not common anyway) so if you maintain your car, replace the worn out bits, brake pads, tyres, bushes, exhaust and clutch for example, also change your oil on a frequent basis essential you have something that will keep going for as long as you want to spend money renewing wearable bits.

To gauge this, I suggest you go to any major city and hop an old mini cab, I was in Birmingham last year and we were collected by an Octavia with well over 400,000 miles on it, all major parts were original engine and gearbox etc and it got us from a to b, I am sure it got the cabby on to c, d, e, f and so on.

Personally I will keep the Fabia as long as we need it and the Yeti has already clocked up 67,000 since August 2011, so budget for your maintenance and keep it running, there is a lot of life in a car these days.

Going to keep my Octy - not because resale is so low (I got it for a steal anyway from a Pug dealer who'd taken it in as px) but because its simply a great car! I'd love a FL vRS or maybe even a Ltd Ed. pre-FL but when you take into account that mine is worth about 4.5 and a FL or Ltd Ed would be twice that, for virtually the same car with similar miles but a few years newer, I can't see the point.

So mine is going to do what most VAG cars do as they age... get lower, a tad more power and more looked after ;)

i ran myw reg mk I slx tdi 110 to 260000 engine was still solid new clutch at 240000 only got rid in 2011 cos came into a bit of money & got mk II vrs . if not would still be trying to run it into the ground

Its almost 50% of what I paid for my house...
