2 step tick over? 2.0 170 Tdi

Hi all, I have had my Superb2 2.0 170 Tdi for about 6 months now and love it, but one thing that I'm not too keen on is the 2 step tick over, ie when you slow and crawl with no foot on the accelerator whilst queuing the engine revs drop to about 900rmp and then when you stop it drops down to the normal 800rpm, I have been told that this is something to do with the engine set up regarding the DPF.

My problem with this is at 900rpm my engine is quite noisy yet just 100rpm less at 800 its about as quite as you would expect, basically sounds like someones riding the accelerator, which in a way it is.

I know this sounds odd but the noise sounds like belts and pulleys wheering, I have been reassured by a very reputable VAG specialist garage that is nothing to worry about as these engines are quite noisy, not a refined as you'd think and it is quite normal. I just can help thinking it is a bit noisy for this type of car and engine.

Anyone else notice this or the noisy 2 step tick over?

Cheers Bry

My 2.0 CR has a staged tickover but I've only noticed this in cold weather.

Normally it sits at 800rpm but when it's cold and all functions are on (like heated screen, seats etc) the tickover sits at 1000rpm

yep noticed that the this morning too in my 1.6 tdi, when i started it read 1.5 degrees C, it went straight to 1000RPM and after i turned all the stuff off window blower, rear heated screen the revs dropped never noticed it on my previous car a 57 plate Octavia classic 1.9 TDI PD Edited by racing boy

I have a TDI 170 with DSG. I have to say that my engine has always been surprisingly quiet for a diesel, even when idling a bit faster than normal, except for lazy tappet noise when cold.

When the engine comes under load, ie when the drive takes up, I suspect that the engine management system increases the engine speed a bit to avoid any risk of stalling. This effect will probably be much more noticeable when the engine is cold and the oil is sluggish.

As an example of this effect: When reversing my car into my garage I have to surmount a small lip. I usually let the car trickly backwards in reverse gear. When the car reaches the lip it fails to surmount it. The car then tries again and when the revs start to drop as it hits the lip and the engine comes under load, the idle speed is increased slightly to avoid stalling and this gives enough power to get past the obstruction. Once past this point, the revs drop again.

I'm with Coops on this one.

My commute into work is only 6 miles - in the recent cold weather the tickover was at 1000rpm and it didnt drop at any point in the journey.

I must admit I thought it a bit odd as I have had 5 diesels since 2000 and this is the only one to do it - thats technology for you I suppose!

So from what is being said the tick over on my car doesn't sound normal, it doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold or if the engine is loaded with equipment once the engine is warmed up I get the tick over go down to 900rpm when coming to a stop then after about a second or 2 it dropping to 800rpm. My car is a manual 4x4 could this make a difference?

The load management can increase the engine idle under the following circumstances (not an exhaustive list):

- DPF regeneration

- Low alternator output versus the electrical demand (e.g. heated seats, power steering at low engine speeds)

- High engine load (e.g. aircon working hard at idle)

- For emission control reasons, e.g. to warm up the cat although this is normally achieved by modifying the injector cycle and closing the EGR.

Done 25k in mine now and the tickover has never bothered me, I've never even noticed what revs it's doing or when?

However or whatever it does, it's never made my engine noisy, I'm still amazed how quiet my 170 is for a diesel.
